There are some very cool handbags with all kinds of 007 designs for carrying. I got a catalog/magazine (a Guns for Gals thing) as kind of a gag from a friend (I like the idea of carrying more than I like actually carrying) but those bags are just too cute! If you're interested, I'll go try to dig it (the magazine) out of my pile o' stuff.

I've got a nice shoulder holster that is comfortable and concealable with a jacket.

I've seen purse/handbags with quick access holsters in the back of the NRA magazine every month.
Here's an example I found by googling "handbag holster."

It depends on what you will be carrying.

I don't know where you can find it, but I saw one lady with a purse that had a compartment in the middle of it where you kept the gun and you could actually reach in from the backside of the purse and fire the gun through the purse if need be (of course this would destroy the purse).

Fobus USA just started carrying a slim inside the pants (waistband) holster that's under $26.

Amazing concealment purses from
Coronado Leather. They are expensive, but extremely well made.

think about backpack purse carry really hard before you actually do it. if you're a small person, how well would you do in a snatch and grab on your purse? how would you access the gun if its in your purse? do you always have it close or do you set it on the floor in your car?
also take into account how you dress. do you regularly wear tight, skimpy outfits, or looser baggy clothes? skirts, shorts or pants?
your would do well to get more than one holster, so you can match it to your outfit, and use purse as a last resort. also, i don't see than anyone has mentioned thigh holsters. there are a couple companies that make "garter" holsters that are not only functional, but personally, i find them sexy as heck. and they work very well for under skirts and formal dresses.

Galco has nice thigh holsters just for women. They work best under a dress or skirt though, so if you are strictly a pants wearer, try a waistband holster.

If you are willing to use a fanny pack, I recommend Tommy's Gunpack. It has been my favorite fanny pack for some years, and has been highly durable. It comes in right and left hand, several sizes and colors. It is also much quieter than most of the Velcro closed systems.
A google search on "Tommy's Gunpack" will get you several references.

You might have a holster already, but have you seen the holsters at
www.chickholsters.com?
They have an ankle holster and thigh holster specifically for women.
