GREEN COVE SPRINGS, Fla. (April 25) - A woman in a wheelchair who swung knives and a hammer at relatives and police died after being shocked by a stun gun, officials said.
Police tried to talk Emily Marie Delafield, 56, into dropping the weapons before they used the Taser to subdue her Monday, Police Chief Robert Musco said. Delafield lost consciousness after the electric jolt and later died at Orange Park Medical Center.
The Florida Department of Law Enforcement is investigating and an autopsy will be conducted to determine a cause of death.
The two officers involved have been put on paid administrative leave during the investigation, which is standard procedure.
Tasers deliver a 50,000-volt jolt through two barbed darts that can penetrate clothing. About 7,000 of the nation's 18,000 police agencies had them last year, and they were used by police more than 70,000 times.
Amnesty International counted 61 U.S. deaths following Taser use last year. Taser International officials disputed that count, saying it linked some deaths to Taser use when there had been no such official conclusion.
I got 18KV at 15mA once... It wasn't a whole lot of fun.
"Mankind existed for hundreds of thousands of years prior to the invention of the TASER. How do you suppose they handled it?"
With bigger knives and hammers. What's your point? You think they were sung lullabyes or something?
"Mankind existed for hundreds of thousands of years prior to the invention of the TASER. How do you suppose they handled it?"
A couple hundred years ago they'd kill her on the spot. Tough but true.
"Part of the problem is that many cops have accepted as fact that a stun gun is a non-leathal weapon."
Bingo.
"How hard is it to kick a wheelchair over?"
I just have the visual of George in Seinfeld racing down the sidewalk in a scooter being chased by the others... (picks it up and runs).
I'm not anti-taser but it does seem that common sense has gone out the window with the new "toy".
They'd "Rodney King" the gal.....
In the good old days when someone swung knives or other weapons at people and would not respond to requests to desist we just shot them with good old-fashioned bullets.
Oh, I don't know, how do you stop anyone while they are swinging knives and a hammer.

Well, if there was a handgun around, they would have shot her. Before that, a sword, before that a friggin rock upside the head.
You see, before the bleeding heart liberals educated everyone to "feel" for the criminal, when someone was attacked by another swinging knives....they were not concerned with how the attacker might feel later.
Despite the plethora of posts repsonding that grat violence would have been done to this woman, I would bet that they would have just picked up the knife and hammer she had thrown and gave her a good talking to.
I AM SPECULATING HERE, but I'll bet these people will complain that the police used excessive force and should have handled the situation differently.........and that these are the EXACT SAME people who called the police because they could not handle the situation themselves!!!!!
Does one out of every thousand tasered deserve to be summarily executed for their crimes?

Uh...she didn't throw them, she was swinging them.
clubs, rocks, spears, knives, guns and batons.
Which would you prefer?
Oh no. A woman in a wheelchair swinging knives. Oh my, whatever shall we do?
No kidding, walk out and shut the door. Let her exhaust herself wrecking the place and then send her ass to a psych unit.
The mistake was calling 911 to deal with a temper tantrum in the first place.
I feel sorry for the cops being used to solve their family relational problems. Nobody meant for this to happen, but it did because the family tried to manipulate their diabled family member through escalation. And she escalated right back. Problem is, that escalating a confrontation with LEO gets you shot by a gun or taser. It's what they do, it's their job. God, I feel sorry for those cops.
Not always true. I've seen people take direct shots of OC to the face with very little reaction, plus it doesnt keep someone from swinging a knife or a weapon.

I never said they SHOULD have tasered her. In fact, I stated pepper spray needed to be dusted off and used more. Taser is LAST resort before rounds fired.
