Monopoly, invented in 1935, is getting with the times. The game's updated Here and Now edition, which is due out this fall, will replace Atlantic City landmarks with legendary streets, neighborhoods and national monuments.
Until May 12, fans can vote on www.monopoly.com for their favorite landmarks from 22 cities — including New York's Times Square, Chicago's Wrigley Field, Honolulu's Waikiki Beach, Beverly Hills' Rodeo Drive and San Francisco's Golden Gate Bridge. Additionally, the votes will determine where each landmark will appear on the game board, the city with the most votes landing on the coveted Boardwalk spot.
"We encourage Monopoly fans to help create the look of our new game board by voting often at our website for their favorite landmarks," Matt Collins, Vice President of Marketing for Hasbro, said in a statement. "Your vote could be the difference needed to land your favorite American city on a blue property space." Among other changes, the railroads will be replaced by New York's JFK airport, Chicago's O'Hare, Los Angeles' LAX and Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson. Property values will rise, money will be in higher denominations and "Community Chest" and "Chance" cards will reflect more modern scenarios.

I used to like that game but now it seems like it takes forever for it to end.
This will bomb like "New Coke". "Buying Boardwalk" is a part of our cultural lexicon.
There's already a million Monopoly retreads.
Heck, every sizable university has a "[univ name]-opoly" version selling at their bookstore.

Another socialist aspect of the game is all the property is "rent controlled", and the owner is unable to set a fair price, this ends up hurting the poor renter, with the blame being placed on the capitalist, but we know it is really the socialism causing the problem.
I think this game belongs in the garbage.
If ain't broke, don't fix it. I live about 2 miles from the site of the original Parker Brothers. It was a stroke of brilliance at the time, and like all such things, can rarely be improved upon.

watch for "Monopoly Classic" to come out a few months after the redesigned Monopoly... at a higher price.

Wow what a vastly different read. Since the Monopoly market is artificially limited to create winners and loosers I never saw that as an implication of anything. Just a game mechanical necessity.
And I always thought the rent listings were the fair market price with that level of improvement. Remember you don't actually have to charge the rent as listed, things can get negotiated. Again purely game mechanics.
Maybe I spent too much time learning about game mechanics.
Good call. We've always played it rather Laissez-Faire, keeping to the rules as much as practicable. One think I cannot stand are folks who pay out for hitting Free Parking.

However, if you don't mind games lasting for a week (literally), you can set up Real Estate trusts, sliding financial instruments, etc. Requires bookkeeping, but we let the banker do that.
Sometimes we let the banker play, too, or allow competing banks. Great stuff. Hate to see it change.
