The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, I usually had to go through Atlanta or Chicago to get to Seattle if I flew out of Reagan National.

I could occasionally get a direct flight out of Dulles.

When we went to Orlando, we connected through Denver. That didn't feel too out of the way.

er...actually there were direct flights out of Dulles more than ~occasionally~, but they ~occasionally~ worked for my schedule...

In my Nanowrimo novel last year you flew to Palm Springs then to Texas and then to Jackson, MS to get to the funeral.

But you were on a mission...

Oh my stars, I can't believe it!

I feel a shimmy coming on!!!!!

In other news, but possibly of the romantic nature, I have been in contact with an old friend of Steve's...from when we first got married and even from before when we were dating.

Remember, I told you Steve played hockey with bunch of guys in Austin? They all came to our wedding and I got to walk between a row of long-haired hockey players? One of them was a scientist...a research scientist/professor at St. Eds University. A doctor of entomology , mind you...

Anyway, I contact him every few years just to keep in touch and I just heard back from him. He's apparently still single and he's researching wasps...in Trinidad.

Your eggplant is ahead of mine...mine is looking healthy, but no blossoms on it yet.

I think eggplant blossoms are vey pretty.

The Kentucky Wonders are just about up to my shoulder in height and we've eaten three cukes so far and three maters, one jalapeno.

I harvested three lovely yellow squash yesterday, in their prime, and just now this morning I got three more pattypan. Sis, that pattypan squash plant is MASSIVE...it shoots off in every direction and is 10' across at least.

Tragedy here... Pippin has wounded a squirrel. Heh. It was only a matter of time. We're out of seeds, so the squirrels were down on the ground looking for leftovers.

I didn't see any open wounds but he's got something neurologically wrong. He can move, he kicked and such when I picked him up, but isn't moving now. I put him in a cat carrier to rest, he'll either die or recover.

We should... It'd be now or never, I'm gonna be really busy later. If my meeting moves to this afternoon, I'll know that after 8... then I'll have a couple hours free... if not, I'll have to get busy getting ready to go.

I wonder if eggplant get big enough to be bunny-proof. I think I've got some zucchini blooms ready to open up...at least I could see yellow when I pulled out this morning.

'Course you realize if we move before the first we'll get hit with the Freepathon posts...

Not that there's anything wrong with that.

True. And if you post it before the 1st, we won't get hit with post #1 or #2 with a permanent ad...

BTW, those seedball things I bought are performing poorly.

Not sure if I didn't prepare the ground well enough or what.

Fiver won't touch the eggplant...it got a fuzz on it when it got older and he doesn't seem to fancy that fuzz. He doesn't mess with the squash and cukes either, now that they're big and have that fuzz on them. I had to drape them with bird netting when they were little, but now he just hangs out under them. He only eats the carrots and leftover lettuce now...the peas are gone, or he'd eat them. The corn has a barrier fence. He doesn't seem to like the pepper plants either. They aren't planted in hardware cloth baskets...I just wrapped the root balls in steel wool and the gophers (who don't seem real interested in pepper plants anyway) don't bother them. So far.

He could get to the beans if he really wanted...but apparently it's too difficult to navigate the barrier and the lettuce is easier. Ha!
