The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Yeah, I guess first step is to limit the description on old jobs, rather than just dropping them off the list.

Gets irritating with forms, though...even just typing names and addresses for four or five or more jobs gets tedious.

I love looking at his resume...it covers the jobs he's had since he was working on and after he finished his BS because it shows that while he was going to school, he actually got jobs in his field and worked. His BS degree was Ag and the first job on the resume is customer assistant at a plant nursery! He basically watered plants and helped customers carry their plants out to the car! LOL!

Now, his degree is Environmental Science and it shows that he's gradually moved from an Ag focus to a monitoring/remediation and his current job description is so technical! Such a contrast and shows how far he's come in the last 12 years! A steady climb...maybe not fast, but steady.

Well, good...I'll abandon the anxiety of a 1 page resume. The Monster one is pretty good and I'll be able to spiff it up a bit and then reformat it for plain text copy and paste.

FWIW, the resume you did for me was by far the nicest I'd ever had. And I'm convinced it got me the job here.

Even during the interview, they commented on how nice it was. :-)

LOL! We are trying to get an idea of names. One lady brought up the whole "It takes a village" idea and that got shot down pretty quickly because of the political connotations ;-)

I thought MASH would be funny, but there is already a MASH group in Texas. Someone else thought of PHENICC (phoenix) I thought that was cool because of the rebirth out of the ashes thing. We're making a game out of it. It's fun to try to make anagrams (that are meaningful to us).

It's true nowadays it's more pasting into online forms than pretty printed copies. Heh... I don't know if anyone buys the fancy textured resume paper any more.

I think the pretty copies are still good to have, if not to send with the application, because that's all online now, but for the eventual interview, to hand out if needed at the time.

I've gone in to a lot of interviews where there's one person who has a bad copy, and a couple of other red shirts that got called into the interview who don't have one at all.

Ok. Be prepared to hand one to the interviewer.

Stapled? Bound? Folded?

Argh!

He has his first interview today...

Well, your type of experience is the kind of experience I have the most experience with :~D I looked at the resumes of technical types like OTs and winmags, and I'm sure Steve's is just like it, and was a little stumped for what to do with them. They are different.

Bring a few copies in case there's a panel of a few people, stapled is fine. Not bound... not folded :~D

It's not related, but my pick for the best anagram of all time was: WPPSS. [whoops!]

Washington Public Power Supply System.

It was the agency that managed a couple of nuclear power plants.

Priceless. :-)

one difference here is that both of the jobs I actually got were with places small enough that a) stuff didn't get parsed by HR

One reason why I prefer going to temp agencies that specialize in the technical area. They usually have people who have actually worked those types of jobs looking at the resumes.

That's how I got to Kansas. :)

It's something we're considering too...

What temp agency did you use?

Another option is consulting...apparently Steve can work for a consulting firm, garner experience, then hire on with a company. It's a thought.

Yeah, but the best one that didn't get passed was Jesse Helms' suggestion for the Department of Public Education.

D.O.P.E.

Monster shows that 2 more people have looked at Steve's resume just this morning, since I've been talking to you guys! That's 4 people now!

I updated it in a mighty way yesterday, did the online one instead of the upload one. The uploaded one only got 2 hits in the week and half it was there. He's gotten four on this new one now in about 18 hours!
