The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

He lent it to me back in February, but I haven't watched it yet.

Didja get the coily lightbulbs? My bill stays under $20, no AC yet but I'm forever leaving the lights and the computer on.

I learned about steel from my father.

Here's a Q: I see stainless forks and spoons and such labelled 18/8, 18/0, etc. What does that mean? What's best?

I need a new blade, too. Mine is cutting ragged.

I got to mow today too...I love our rider! We too need to something about the blade, I had to mow a couple places twice...I think it just needs a good sharpening. Must be all the rocks I hit while mowing. I got the breaker bar out after and must have dug up at least 10 good sized rocks. Only thing is, now I have to fill in the holes. In other news, my pole beans are up! Mrsnad

I've got sticks, too. Every time I think I've got 'em all...Cisco finds more.

I think he may be dragging 'em out from under the house, or reaching through the fence somewhere.

I'm gonna wait until tomorrow to mow the back, I guess. Should be cooler.

I still want to plant beans...trying to figure where it'd be best to put them. I have alll that wire fence for them to grow on...it's just a matter of deciding where I'm most likely to be able to dig a trench for them...

That's a notation for cookware. The two numbers are for chrome and nickel in the alloy. The lower the nickel, the cheaper the stainless. A high nickel content makes the stainless harder to work, and so costs more. A chrome number lower than 18 indicates cheap stainless.

Cheap stainless has a weak magnetic attraction, and can rust lightly. The more nickel, the less a magnet will be attracted. Cheap stainless cannot be polished to a high shine, so will often have a brushed finish. Depending on what it's expected to do, a low-alloy stainless can still be acceptable.

This applies only to pots and pans. Knives come in many forms of steel, from ordinary cold-rolled to the exotic, and thousands of formulas in between. You need a handbook to look it up, although many different forms of knife steel are quite similar to each other.

Ecurbh - serious bummer that, good luck and we hope it's only a week betwixt paychecks from old one to new one.

Evening 2J; if you haven't sharpened the blade recently, that's probably all it needs. I sharpen ours a couple times a season.

I thought 18/10 was a good combo for stainless.

It is, it's one of the better alloys. Nickel makes steel hard to work, so much higher nickel content gets you into the realm of "exotics", which you don't need for pots and pans, or flatware.

I believe that the 18/10 is what's used in 'better' sinks. I've seen a few that are 20/10, but these tend to be VEY expensive.
