The Hobbit Hole XXIX - Until the stars are all alight...
http://freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net/ ^

Posted on 04/20/2006 2:10:46 PM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

Until the stars are all alight

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Uh-oh...hope it isn't in that red one there. It isn't in the buckets in the house...just came in to check that.

Not in the red bucket neither. Where did we pull the last run to?

To the gate. the run parallel to the store...

If it's not in a pile next to the fencing that was leftover, I'm pretty sure it's in the barn, we have the come-along and the rest of the stuff. It's just covered with frap and we didn't find it the first look.

But speaking of flowers :~D

Here's our new whiskey barrel, all planted with a bunch of Red Petunias, Red Geraniums, White Geraniums, and Blue Lobelia that I hope will fall over the side.

Red Petunias - these were just leftovers... I bought way too many to go just in the whiskey barrel, not sure what I was thinking... :~D

And a little hanging pot of the same thing, red white and blue, by the gate. on the outside.

We'll see how they grow :~D

Can I come see?

My hanging basket adventure was a failure. Didn't find what I wanted at Home Depot and the ones they had (not geraniums) were close to twenty bucks for a basket. Didn't occur to me to buy the pots and smaller plants...duh! Instead, I wandered aimlessly to other places in search of what I wanted for not horribly expensive, and didn't find it.

So I bought a bitty charcoal grill instead. We'll see if I am able to get that going in anything approaching a timely fashion. Figure it'll get me through until I can afford something nice.

Here y'all are bein' all gardenly and domestic. I on the other hand hope to get back to the yard tomorrow. If I don't mow what grass I ~do~ have in the back soon, I'm gonna have to bale it.

Got a couple of small birds livin' in my ferns on thefrontporch.

In other news, I remembered tonight I hadn't filed my Virginia taxes (due tomorrow). Fortunately, I already had 'em done and just filed them online.

Out in a meetin' all day tomorrow. Not likely to be online.

In other, other news it looks as though that script error I kept getting might have been related to the firewall I was using. So I need to figger out somethin' new. Gonna take the tower to the computer service store that cleaned up thelaptop for the Mrs. Then we'll reinstall somethin' else. I think he suggests Norton.

The storms have moved to from the North to the East of us, missing us almost completely...we got a bit of a sprinkle, which I stood in the entire time, observing the storm pass by. It was awesome to behold, horizontal lightening...really beautiful deep blue clouds.

We worked in the back yard all day...putting the coop away and mowing. There wasn't much else to do...nature had cleaned up after it's self. I found one buff orpington feather and I almost kept it (like the feather in Forrest Gump) but saw that it wasn't in good shape so I put it back down on the ground. Later that evening, a sparrow got it...I even pointed it out to Steve!

The heavy rains we had last week rinsed the ground and now it just looks almost like there was nothing ever back there...except the grass is a little shorter in the run area.

The yard looks nice...it had grown up to our knees in some spots back there...but it's all trimmed now. It's a relief to get that all done. It looks nice and organized. Seeing that empty coop back there was hard but I couldn't move it alone. Now it's a nice back yard...

Sure, come see! :~D

We looked at the color pots that were already made up too... They cost more, and you don't get to pick the colors. We decided on the wood pot and made our own hanger.

I found the big chain... we had put it in the truck.

The birds seem to be enjoying the water

Is that the water in the bird bath or is that the water in your unofficial 'rain garden"? LSA

Heh....

In the "unofficial rain garden." It's where the water collects in those bobcat tracks the sunroom guys left in thebackyard.

The plan is to build it up and plant squash, cukes, and melons....if I have the room.

Dang...which reminds me, I never sent in the signature confirmation part of my e-filing. Oops.

Guess I'd better get around to doing that...

Now it's a nice back yard...

You can enjoy it this summer as you harvest the vegetables in your terrific raised garden.

Can you smell my dinner cooking?

I gave in and decided to try the little guy tonight. I'd also picked up one of the chimney thingies Suzi mentioned, and I was curious. Danged if they don't work like a charm - no lighter fluid, no trial and error, and pretty fast, too. I can see how they might not work for a really big grill, but for what I need...seems to do the trick perfectly.

I'm good at that.

Heh, talked to my sister this weekend... she kicked two of the bothers out of their bedroom and moved them to the basement this summer so I only have to share a room with her, and not Jill and all her frap.
