Where Vista Fails
WinSuperSite ^ | April 19, 2006 | Paul "the MS koolaid drinker" Thurrott

I'll leave a fuller examination of Vista's broken promises for a later date. For now, let's look at the most current builds we do have--build 5308 and 5342--and see where Vista just completely blows it. As with the broken promises, Vista's failures are legion, but I'll just focus on a few examples here and leave the full list for a later time.

He should just switch to linux. We've got XGL, batch installs of programs as well as patches, and free upgrades every 6 or so months.

Microsoft can't even get administrator/user rights implemented correctly.

Why should he switch to Linux when he's converted his family to OS X?

There's plenty of reasons. Did you really need me to list them?

Linux doesn't have too many advantages over OS X. Being free is about the only plus.

Wake me when Linux UI devs get a clue.

They both have their plusses/minuses as far as UI goes. They're both ahead of windows, and can largely ship their products on time at that.

Don't bother. It would be a pack of lies, just like your tagline.

Mac OS X is the best desktop OS on the market, period.

For Microsoft to get Vista "right" they have to do what Apple did with OS/X - break backward compatibility, limit hardware compatibility, and make a fresh start from the ground up. They are going to have to do this at some point anyway, so why not now, especially when no one in the corporate world is particularly enthusiastic about Vista, anyway? Just keep refining XP for a few years as the "legacy" system and deliver something truly new and innovative with Vista that the corporate world might actually hunger for.

It's unfortunate to see all the computer science talent at Microsoft going to waste. I'm sure some of those developers wake up every morning, think about having to maintain those 50 million lines of code, and wish they could just roll over and go back to sleep.

Mr. Jeeves, Happy OS/X Convert. ;)

By a mile. Anyone new to computing should be encouraged to buy an Intel Mac.

Linux is a great server OS that I'm sure will also offer a superlative desktop environment some day, but I just really haven't seen one yet.

I wish that Linux could have a superlative desktop environment, but the Linux developer community is in a permanent state of anarchy. It lacks the strong leadership needed to integrate the hardware and software into a coherent desktop solution. There have been efforts to improve the Linux desktop experience, like Nautilus and GnuStep, but they have failed to become de facto standards.

I agree with your point that Linux is a great OS for servers. I've been using it on servers for ten years, and it has performed well in that role.

I wouldn't call Linux's UI ahead of anything. Most of the time they're content to rip Windows off, and the few original bits are confusing as hell.

Until another row of userbase projections is done as was about a year/half ago, we'd just be going over old data.

I still stand by what I've said. If/when the new numbers come out, and if I'm wrong I'll openly say so.

But I doubt you'll do the same.

I agree. I think that later on virtualization is going to give MS the excuse it needs to do just that........ Bye bye backward compatibility.

You mean, not even a command line? How about a calculator? A pen and a piece of paper?

Did you even read the article?
