I received some money recently. I have decided to put a portion of it aside to spend on retrofitting the house and packing in some supplies for 6 for a year.

I want to be able to rotate the supplies through our regular pantry. I also will be retrofitting our well to pump into a holding tank...and I am looking for a good wood cookstove, I have a big jotol in the living room.

Candles, oil lamps whatever. Your input and links would be appreciated.

Thank Utah Girl. She did all the work.

I saved most of the thread in a Word file for future reference.

It is neither an assault rifle, machine gun or full automatic, it is simply a semi automatic. (bad ugly gun, so labeled by the antis).

What is it?

Just a couple of deep cycle batteries like the ones used for boats and such. You can charge them from your generator while it's on and when you don't need the gen you can run a small tv, radio and lights with the batteries. Saves on fuel and noise.

Do they age in storage or can they be put on the shelve and activated?

Bring them to a full charge and set them aside. I recharge mine once a year. They last a long time. My oldest one is about eight years old and worked fine just a few weeks ago.

Radio Shack sells a radio with a built in LED and most importantly, a wind-up generator.

Survival in an emergency situation is a bit like real estate - first it is about location, location, and location. Before I spent any money retrofitting your house or buying supplies I'd spend some time looking at where you live (are you in a city? in the suburbs of a major city? in a small town? in the country?), which state you live in, and so on.

The biggest danger to your person, family, and property in a "end of society" type of emergency is proximity to too many people.

Man, I don't know if you can still buy batteries like that as what we used to call "dry-charged". I rather doubt it.

Once they have acid in them, they will eventually run dead if you don't periodically keep them charged up. In fact, if a battery goes dead enough and it is cold enough, it can freeze!

The easiest way to avoid this is to use a trickle charger. These are small battery chargers that will bring the battery up to full charge and then maintain it there for you. The only thing you've got to do is check the water level from time to time depending on what sort of battery it is.

When we use a batt bank out here, you usually have a controller that you attach to the battery array. That handles all your charging and inverting for you.

I remember the dry charged batteries. What did they add to them to make them work? Water?

You can still buy some motorcycle batteries as dry charged. You add a solution of sulfuric acid to them until they are at the upper level, and then you top off the charge. When you're done, you fill it to the top with water. Once you "activate" a dry battery, you always top with distilled water.

It runs in my mind that the specific gravity of the sulfuric acid solution is like 1.26-1.28.

I plan on a 30.06, a 12 guage, and a .44.
and ammo..............A .44 magnum pistol and a .44 magnum rife cuts down on the different ammo and the .44 magnum rifle, although not the range of the 30-06, has lots of knock down power.
