Cat in Germany saves baby's life

A cat saved the life of a newborn baby abandoned on the doorstep of a Cologne house in the middle of the night by meowing loudly until someone woke up, a police spokesman said on Saturday.

"The cat is a hero," Cologne police spokesman Uwe Beier said. "Its loud meowing got the attention of the homeowner and saved the baby from suffering life-threatening hypothermia. The homeowner opened door to see why the cat was making so much noise and discovered the newborn."

Beier said the boy was taken to hospital at 5 a.m. on Thursday, when overnight temperatures fell toward zero, and had suffered only mild hypothermia. He said there was no indication of what happened to the boy's mother.

Ok, but what about the cat? Did it at least get a bowl of milk or a treat?

Was wondering the same thing. It should get a fish and some catnip, at least.

It's not that they're bad, they're just not particularly socially developed. I appreciate the friendly cat things my cats do, like purring and soliciting pettings and acting like I make them happy.

I didn't say cats were bad, just that they are 'me' oriented. They take care of their own needs, self sufficient. Dogs will do anything for the sake of their beloved owners. I have one who is trying to protect me from the yardmen cleaning out my flowerbeds right now.

I have had lots of cats and 'it's all about them'.

Be careful ... what you have posted may well be an indictment of yourself and how you deal with "your" cats.   LOL!

There are many true cat afficionados here on FR ... and we realize that you get out of a cat what you put into a cat.

Anyone who has ever had a fabulous CAT/PERSON relationship ... as I have had with several of the many, many cats that have passed through my lilfe ... can tell you that in those rare, special relationships ... for both Cat and Person ... it is all about the relationship ....

I have one [dog] who is trying to protect me from the yardmen cleaning out my flowerbeds right now.

Don't take that personally ... LOL!

What you have described as devotion to you by your dog is simply an instinctive territoriality. It is all about the dog and has nothing to do with you except in how you choose to perceive it.

However ... believe that your dog is protecting you ... if it gives you comfort ... and we cat lovers will bask in the glow of our cats true love and devotion to us ...

There is no way to win the cat vs. dog vs. cat argument. Each specie has its own merits and faults and each is ideally suited to be the pet of people disposed to love them.

I have had dozens and dozens of cats, they don't do heroic things for others out of the goodness of their hearts.

Neither do dogs.

Obviously you have never been close enough to one of your dozens and dozens of cats to realize that many cats will growl to announce the presence of intruders. Of course, cats are more subtle than dogs ... none of that infernal yapping that is so tiresome ...

I am 66 years old and have owned and loved many many cats over my lifetime and I really did love them. I eventualy became allergic to them after having one share my pillow for 15 years. No more cats for me, they make my eyes water and my head hurt now. When Motorola died at age 15 I said no more cats.

When Motorola died at age 15 I said no more cats.

What a terrific name for a Kitty.

I had a similar reaction when my husband's dog Daisy died some years back ... no more dogs. Cats are cleaner and more affectionate and don't smell as bad as dogs.

Whatever works for any individual ... at any point in their life ... is the right decision for that particular person. I am sorry you developed allergies to cats ... and pray that I never do as that would possibly deprive me of one of life's great pleasures ...

Cheers!

My Jack Russels love everybody but my hound dog won't let a man come within 10 feet of me without showing hostility to him. She does it in the yard, the house or when we are out walking. I won't take her to the dog park because of that. You can doubt that she is protecting me if you choose but I know she is.

We were always cat and dog people. We had 7 housecats at one point, most of them Maine Coons but now we are only dog people. Allergies cropped up or we would still have cats.

We picked up a tiny baby kitten on the front step of a motel in Eagle Pass Tx. She was starving, dehydrated and covered with ringworm. We brought her in, fed and watered her and she fell asleep purring so loud we couldn't hear the TV (an old Motorola) hence the name.
