Last-place Yanks sent to fourth straight loss (Red Sox are in 1st)

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ervin Santana allowed one run over 5 2-3 innings, Adam Kennedy hit a tiebreaking two-run triple and the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees 3-2 Saturday night to hand Randy Johnson his first loss of the season.

The last time Johnson and Santana pitched in the same game was back on Oct. 10, when both worked in relief in the finale of the AL division series. Santana, who was bumped to the bullpen because the Angels went with a four-man rotation in the postseason, pitched 5 1-3 innings for the series-clinching victory in his postseason debut after Bartolo Colon left in the second inning with an injured shoulder.

In the rematch, Santana (1-0) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out one in his season debut. The 23-year-old Dominican right-hander, who gave up a first-inning homer to Derek Jeter, was lifted after walking Jason Giambi on a borderline 3-2 pitch with two out and runners at second and third. The walk came one out after Santana was hit in the leg by a line drive single off the bat of Gary Sheffield.

J.C. Romero retired all four batters he faced, Scot Shields pitched a scoreless eighth and Francisco Rodriguez got three outs for his third save.

Rodriguez, who allowed Hideki Matsui's third homer of the season with one out in the ninth, converted his 21st straight save opportunity to break the club record set by Troy Percival in 2003.

Johnson (1-1) went the distance, throwing 97 pitches over eight innings and allowing seven hits. He struck out eight and walked none.

Kelly Stinnett started behind the plate for the Yankees instead of Jorge Posada, who caught Johnson's 15-2 victory at Oakland in the season opener Monday night.

Yes it was. He looked much sharper than Pap. The Sox will be a much better team with Foulke closing and Pap, Tim, and Knuckles (Tavares) setting up.

Stern continues to impress.

The best news for the Sox is that Papi and Manny have not even started to hit yet.

It was also nice to see Bard have a solid game catching Wake.

"my Yankees have more World Series titles, Championships, and Divisional Penants than any other team."

I live in the 21st century (2001 to present). Ancient history is interesting but not relevent. Talk to me when they win it in the modern era.

Remember my man, Bucky Dent? The Yankees were 14 1/2 games out of first place in July, 1978. This was the tie-breaker game. Sox choked and the Yankees went on to win the World Series against the Dodgers on the strength of Bucky Dent and Brian Doyle.

Bill "Woopsy Daisy" Buckner chokes off a sure victory for the Sox against the NY Mets in the 1986 World Series.

And to think the Red Sox were celebrating just a game earlier as if they won the Series. Perez and the Big Red Machine put a choke hold on the Sox during the 1975 World Series.

To quote Garrett Morris' character on SNL, Chico Escuela, "Baseball been berry berry good for the Hankees. Baseball been not so good for the Red Sox."

I can go on but I don't think there's enough bandwidth. I'm willing to accept the 2004 defeat. I even rooted for the Red Sox in the Series.

No matter what, we do love baseball

Check the standings today.

Yankee fans are now celebrating being in a statistical tie for first place with the Red Sox? Man, the tables have turned . . .

We're playing through.

We're always better on the back nine.

Too bad you have a dearth of pitchers who can get you to Mariano in the top of the ninth, my friend.

I've never been a huge baseball fan, I prefer football myself, but even I have been following them this year.
