ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ervin Santana allowed one run over 5 2-3 innings, Adam Kennedy hit a tiebreaking two-run triple and the Los Angeles Angels beat the New York Yankees 3-2 Saturday night to hand Randy Johnson his first loss of the season.
The last time Johnson and Santana pitched in the same game was back on Oct. 10, when both worked in relief in the finale of the AL division series. Santana, who was bumped to the bullpen because the Angels went with a four-man rotation in the postseason, pitched 5 1-3 innings for the series-clinching victory in his postseason debut after Bartolo Colon left in the second inning with an injured shoulder.
In the rematch, Santana (1-0) allowed two hits and three walks while striking out one in his season debut. The 23-year-old Dominican right-hander, who gave up a first-inning homer to Derek Jeter, was lifted after walking Jason Giambi on a borderline 3-2 pitch with two out and runners at second and third. The walk came one out after Santana was hit in the leg by a line drive single off the bat of Gary Sheffield.
J.C. Romero retired all four batters he faced, Scot Shields pitched a scoreless eighth and Francisco Rodriguez got three outs for his third save.
Rodriguez, who allowed Hideki Matsui's third homer of the season with one out in the ninth, converted his 21st straight save opportunity to break the club record set by Troy Percival in 2003.
Johnson (1-1) went the distance, throwing 97 pitches over eight innings and allowing seven hits. He struck out eight and walked none.
Kelly Stinnett started behind the plate for the Yankees instead of Jorge Posada, who caught Johnson's 15-2 victory at Oakland in the season opener Monday night.

I kind of like our new leadoff guy.
good sign! Winning the close ones.
It helps when the starters can go seven strong innings.
Coo coo for Coco Crisp!
An amusing look, Abbott-and-Costello-style, at all the new
names on the team, from WBZ's Carl Stevens (go to "Who's
On First?" on the right side of the page):

"Who's on First?
The Boston Red Sox have a lot of new faces as they start a new season. The entire infield has changed, and that prompted WBZ's Michael Coleman and Carl Stevens to write a little piece highlighting the changes. So, take a seat in the bleachers, and listen"
Five games into the season and the Redsox have wrapped it up! LOL LOL I like the way they ignore the little meeting with the fags from Queer eye that the Sox had.
I was giddy the other night when he laid down that bunt single to start the game. Turns out he could have just kept the bat on his shoulder and walked like everyone else did that night but it was great to see just the same.
ANNOUNCER #1: And the Yankees take the field!
ANNOUNCER #2: What is with the Yankees? They look like they're having trouble running, they can't move!
ANNOUNCER #1: It's their uniforms, they're too tight, they've shrunk! They're running like penguins! Forget this game!
ANNOUNCER #2: Oh my God, The Big Unit just split his pants!
JERRY: That's a shame.
No I was thinking the 1978 Red Sox and of course last year. Goodgodalmighty, my Yankees have more World Series titles, Championships, and Divisional Penants than any other team. We can afford to take the hit now and again.
This is just the beginning of the year, but I do love the tenacity of perennial losers. Every year, we're all equal.
BWAHAHAHAHAHA
The Yankees are not going to live that one down for a long, long time.
I have a feeling the Yank Offs will finish third this year.
The greatest choke job in sport's history, being up 3 games and losing 4 straight.
Team | League | Total | Year |
New York Yankees | AL | 26 | 1923, 1927, 1928, 1932, 1936, 1937, 1938, 1939, 1941, 1943, 1947, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1953, 1956, 1958, 1961, 1962, 1977, 1978, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 |
Boston Red Sox | AL | 6 | 1903, 1912, 1915, 1916, 1918, 2004 |
I'd say the 2004 World Series is equivalent to winning 50 World Series titles based on the difficulty. Therefore, the Red Sox have 55 World Series titles compared to the measly 26 championships of the Yankees.
So that AH George Steinbrenner sold you the team? Good for you and if you can take a hit now and then enjoy eternity as the team with the greatest possible choke in baseball history. Even if another team some day does it too, your Yankees will own the distinction of having done it first after over 100 years of baseball history.
BTW, your Yankees haven't won anything since Hilary became a fan, enjoy the Clinton Curse too.
LoL!
HOLY COW!!
Went to Fenway Park South today (Camden Yards) to see the Sox sweep the O's. Pretty good game. 60% of the fans were Red Sox fans...as usual. Orioles fans are so lame, they don't even know when to cheer without a bugle or a flashing "make noise" sign. Totally drowned out by the "Let's go Red Sox" chant.
It was nice to see Foulke have a good outing today.
