Pit bulls on the loose went on a rampage Thursday and terrorized a southwest Philadelphia neighborhood. The dogs escaped from their backyard at 53rd Street and Cedar Avenue and ran several blocks through the neighborhood, attacking several people. Their rampage ended with a policeman shooting one of the dogs.

Yeah. We're bigoted against dogs that are bred to kill other dogs, and not surprised when that trait extends to children and adults.
How do you explain the dozens of other breeds that have been responsible for human fatalities?

I have not had dog to my knowledge but would gladly slaughter one if my family were starving.
I once watched a monkey slaughtered and ate it....not very good at all...candor, candor.
Shame about the monkey was that the folks who served it were proud of it and I had to act like I liked it. Like the time I had mondongo too.
It's a matter of numbers and severity of attacks.
Pits have a "killer" trait in their lineage. There are few other dogs, save the Presa Canario, with such powerful jaws that they can kill with one bite.
If you want to save this breed, you better get busy. Nobody buys the "they're great dogs; they've just got bad owners" defense, when so many of the "good" dogs go off too. More and more communities are going to outlaw these beasts.
Go to a Guide Dog website and educate yourself.
In a nutshell, if the guide dog develops fear of other dogs from an attack, it becomes useless out in public and will have to be retired. In the meantime training a new dog costs $50K, and the blind person's life gets turned upside down while transitioning to the new dog.
Of course this incident may have been preventable with a responsible breed ownership decision.

Sometimes the dog will not walk down the sidewalk where the attack took place. In other scenarios the fear reaction generalizes to the point that the dog will not work at all and requires rehabilitation training by the guide dog school. Some dogs can become fearful of other dogs and react either by refusing to work in the proximity of other dogs, and other dogs will become defensive/ aggressive and need to be retired from active service.
This is a terrible violation of the guide dog user's basic right to walk in their neighborhoods and communities. It exacts a high emotional toll on person and dog. If a dog has to be prematurely retired it also hits us all financially as the training and support of a guide dog team in the field can be an investment of $50,000 or more. Dog attacks truly are an access issue!

PUBLIC EDUCATION- PEOPLE ARE NOT EASY TO CHANGE! One of the things we all dread hearing when out on a walk with (or without) our dogs is someone yelling from a distance, "Don't worry, he's friendly!" This is a "warning" that some pet owner’s dog is approaching you. (In most cases, the dog has just noticed your guide dog and wants to check him out as a potential playmate.) One possible response from you might give is: "MINE'S NOT, so please get your dog under control!” If possible, try not to get too angry as this might be an opportunity to educate or get to know a neighbor or member of your community. These scenarios usually do result in the other dog simply sniffing or trying to solicit play. In cases like these, it is best to try to keep moving and get out of the area, but if the situation is so distracting to your dog, get your dog under physical control, get your dog's attention, and get away as soon as it is safe to resume guidework.Getting effective laws on the books is a critical step. Equally important is making the general public aware that allowing their pet dogs to run lose in communities or be uncontrolled even on leash is NOT acceptable. Although most people are basically good and responsible citizens, there seems to be a sub-culture of dog owners that feel their dogs can (and should) run free. These are usually people who if asked would tell you that they consider their dogs to be friendly, obedient, and under control. There are some who feel that owning certain breeds of dogs that are born and bred "sporting" (fighting breeds) is a status symbol of sorts and perhaps an alter ego. I must say here that there is no particular breed that attacks. Pit Bulls are often sited as major offenders but so are many other breeds and variations of breeds. Even some small dogs are particularly yappy and prone to attacking other dogs/people. If a dog owner has a dog they MUST be aware of that dog’s negative potentials as well as their positive attributes. In so many cases where pet dogs have attacked guides, the owners are incredulous! "Lulu has NEVER done anything like that before!"
Of course this incident could have been preventable with a responsible decision by the dog owner to keep his dog contained.

Whatever happened to the days when a dog that hopped a fence just went sniffin around, peeing on hydrants and maybe knocked over a trash can or two? These things just go right for neigbors or their animals. It's crazy I tell ya.

Pit Bull Debate Heats Up In Sulphur
We have all heard about the many serious and sometimes even deadly pit bull dog attacks that take place every year across the country. Just last week a young boy in Sulphur was attacked by one of the dogs. The young boy is recovering in the hospital, but the attack prompted the Sulphur City Council to consider banning the dog breed from the city altogether. The proposal sparked a huge debate at Monday night's Sulphur City Council meeting, leaving many people on opposite sides of the fence. Is it the breed of dog itself, or the owner that gives pit bulls a bad name?One Sulphur man who owns a pit bull said, "They are not just pets. They are not just something I can through away. If y'all ban pit bulls I have to leave this city that I have lived in my whole life." Be that as it may, some folks in Sulphur want to see pit bulls a thing of the past, especially people like Charles King. King's grandson was attacked by a pit bull last week. King said, "From one dog bite to the face from an American pit bull, one bite, over 100 stitches. One bite."
Pit bull advocates say not so fast when it comes to generalizing the breed. A number of pit bull owners at Monday night's Sulphur City Council meeting argued that the public perception of the breed has been falsely portrayed by the media. One pit bull owner said, "The problem we have here is that we have certain people out there that are giving the breed a bad name." That is a point that city council members considered, they also listened to other points. Some Sulphur residents even augured that a pit bull ban would punish innocent tax paying citizens.
At the end of the night, city leaders decided a pit bull ban in Sulphur was not the right direction to go. Sulphur City Council members are now vowing to work with those that love the breed and those that want them banned. They hope to reach some kind of middle ground that will keep the public safe, while still giving pit bull lovers the right to keep their dogs.

Thanks for the ping. It is unfortunate that a young boy was attacked but it is good news that a ban was not put in place. Common sense prevailed for a change. I absolutely refuse to argue with the ignorant people on this forum who haven't a clue and pull statistics out of their ass to try to prove a point. If I go on any futher I feel I will get banned and having been on this forum for many years I would prefer that not to happen.
As I spend my days caring for 17 pit bulls in my dog rescue I haven't much time to take the bait these fools attempt to put out as fact.

We adopted a pit bull from our humane society because my husband had actually been online looking for a dog, and found her. She was the first dog we saw when we got there, and she's been hit by a car and looked pretty rough. She was sweet and my husband and I fell in love with her. She's been to the dog park so many times I've lost count, and guess what? She has never killed another dog or human being. She is actually always the one that is 'attacked' by other dogs - she is extremely submissive and submits to even little tiny dogs.
Why did we adopt a pit bull? Quite honestly, I didn't think it was a big deal, until I spoke with my mother who was 'terrified' when I told her our dog was a pit. Then my mom met Patches, and she loves her. Of course, any dog is still an ANIMAL who may do things that are unpredictable. The key is to be an owner who is able to take control of their dog and control the situation. Personally, I don't like little dogs, they all seem to have a complex and either bite or bark too much. But, that's an unfair generalization on my part, and I'm sure your dogs are sweet and would never do that.
