Metro bans pit bulls from dog parks
Associated Press ^ | 04/06/06 | MICHAEL CASS

The Nashville Parks Board has banned pit bulls and pit bull mixes from the city's three dog parks.

The ban came after several attacks on people and other dogs.

The dogs still will be allowed in other park areas as long as they are leashed.

Some breed owners say the ban unfairly targets pit bulls without considering whether a dog is trained.

Doesn't matter how "well-trained" these dogs are. Seems like they attack without warning and are just a vicious breed.

I have two American Pit Bull Terriers, and love them to pieces, but I agree about this decision. They have been bred for years to like fighting other dogs, and although some of them never develop dog aggression, they really aren't dog park kinda dogs. Until the dog aggression can be bred out of them, they are a risk to other dogs. No, not every single one, but most of them. One of mine loves all dogs she sees, the other one picks and chooses the ones she likes. Not to mention that a lot of attacks on people other than children seem to happen when people are trying to break up a fight between dogs. This would eliminate that, at least in dog parks.

Pit Bulls are forbidden to exist in some European nations, and I understand why.

They are extremely ferocious, and I really don't see why they should live amongst a civilized society.

IMO its a bad idea to let any dog with a high prey drive run off leash at a dog park. But that's not to say it should be against the law. Most professional trainers will tell you taking a dog to a dog park is counterproductive to obedience training.

Yeah, dog parks themselves are pretty problematic. There's no way to ensure dogs you encounter there have been vaccinated, are people friendly, dog friendly, don't have mange, etc. Lots of dog fights happen there, and definitely not just pit bulls. As far as not letting any more pits breed, I am all for it, to a certain extent. No more backyard breeders, and only responsible people who have something POSITIVE to add to the gene pool should be allowed to breed any dog. The majority of these dogs are still safe. The ones I see in the papers mauling people seem to be those overgrown mixes that idiots try to call pit bulls. Other breeds have been introduced not only to make the dog bigger, but more human aggressive. The original breed, however, is small, wiry, and very people friendly. Not dog friendly though.

Typical. Every vicious dog is a Pit Bull. Even a blind man can see that.

I would not ever take my beautiful, gentle, Golden Retriever to a dog park. He mixes only with dogs we already know. Not only do I not want to see him attacked by another dog, I don't want him exposed to potential illnesses from dogs with irresponsible owners.

The dog parks around here are filthy, with waste everywhere. And they do not want you to use a leash.

My dog runs free on my personally owned 12 acres and on my friend's 20 acres with her two large dogs. When they go to the beach, we have a leash in hand and we call the dogs back if other dogs are present.
