The man known as the "Mr. Grand Lake" has died from injuries he suffered after being attacked by a moose in the small mountain town last month.
Louis Heckert, 92, had been in Lutheran Hospice Care since a few days after the attack.
Family members expressed thanks for the expressions of kindness, prayers and support they received and thanked by St. Anthony Central Hospital, where Heckert was also treated, and Lutheran Hospice for the compassionate care extended to Heckert, in a statement released today.
Heckert, the former mayor and councilman in Grand Lake, which is on the west side of Rocky Mountain National Park, had celebrated his 92nd birthday on the night of March 25 by dancing and laughing with townspeople.
The next morning he was walking to church when he was attacked by a bull moose that later was found to have broken ribs and backbone, possibly from being hit by a car.
The moose, estimated to weigh 800 pounds, butted Heckert in the head.
His family said he suffered from macular degeneration and may not have seen the animal prior to the attack.
Bush's fault.
If he had sealed the borders the moose wouldn't have come here from Canada.
A "moose attack" is pretty rare as they are worse than elk in avoiding humans, but an injured moose that is having trouble eating and avoiding high country predators is a very dangerous animal.
I hope his sister is OK
He shouldn't have been carving his initials on the moose with a toothbrush!
