PINE VALLEY A race to avoid the Border Patrol yesterday ended when a speeding car flipped and ejected five passengers, killing one of them, authorities said.
Three of the four survivors were hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, said Officer Brian Pennings of the California Highway Patrol. The fourth survivor was less seriously injured.
The car, a blue Ford Probe, failed to stop at a checkpoint on westbound Interstate 8 east of Pine Valley, said Richard Kite of the Border Patrol.
He said agents headed after the Probe and came upon it, overturned, on Olde Highway 80 just west of Pine Valley. Kite said he did not know if agents had been in pursuit.
Neither Kite nor Pennings said whether those in the car are suspected illegal border-crossers.
The car was going about 100 mph when the driver lost control. The car crossed into the eastbound lane, hit a dirt embankment, then hit a fence and rolled onto its roof and slid several hundred feet, Pennings said.
A witness saw that the right rear tire of the Probe was deflated as the driver sped down the road. The tire, a spare not designed for high speeds, disintegrated in the crash, Pennings said.
The occupants of the car included one woman. The man who died was a 24-year-old resident of Mexico, Pennings said.
The Mexican consulate was notified to help identify the victims and contact their families.
Of course, we taxpayers get to foot the costly bill for the medical expenses of the survivors, the transport of the dead man back to his family in Mexico (or perhaps the airfare to bring his family to the US -- didn't the Stupreme Court rule that death on American soil confers instant Citizenship?), the cleanup of the crash scene, etc. Heck, I wouldn't be surprised to see (Spanish-speaking) taxpayer-funded grief counselors provided to all parties involved.
Next there will come the ACLU ambulance chasers to sue the US Border Control for chasing these "poor undocumented workers". We'll get the bill for that multi-million-dollar settlement too.
LOL
I don't want to wear them either, but I do. maybe I should
skip work to go protest that in Mexico.
They'll blame BUSH!!
Your post is untrue I don't know of anyone who wants more car crashes.
Now the taxpayers get screwed paying their hospital bills. Every day my opinion of Mexicans goes down.
A 'spacesaver' tyre for your trunk instead of the regular sized tyre.
Gee and some people have expressed doubt about the unreasoning hatred some of the Hysterical show.
And I thought WE horrible Americans were killing all the illegals via our ...just..not..caring enough for their well-being. (/sarcasm)
The reason for this is because it is a policy that injured illegals can not be taken into custody. If the Service takes them into custody then the Service has to pay for the medical.
Because they are still human beings.
This ticks me off. I recently pulled out of a parking space next to a car with Hispanics in it. Glancing into the open window, I saw that they were pulling out with the small children sitting on the laps of the equally non-restrained adults. There was room in the car for the kids to have their own seats; the adults simply didn't bother to buckle them in.
Then, of course, my tax dollars get to pay for their hospital bills (or my inflated hospital bill pays for their non-payed bill). Fantastic.
Illegal immigration is unfair not only for legal residents and citizens, but it's not fair for the illegal immigrants, either. This helps prove it.
Just killing the car passengers Americans are just too lazy to kill.
I would at some distance beyond the checkpoint, bury some electronically activated spike strips to blow their tires and just beyond that enough border agents to snag them if they bail and run.
You've never heard of unintended consequences?
If only we would give all citizens of the world (with the exception of the US) driver's licenses, this would not have happened.
Our immigration politics has chosen one of the worst solutions, we can do much better.
The little mini spare tire many cars come with. Around here we call them doughnut tires. They are made to get you to the next service station. Anyone would be crazy to drive over 40 or 50 mph on one.
