What women look for in a man

Wed Apr 5, 2006 4:47 PM BST164

LONDON (Reuters) - The old adage that women look for wealth in a man appears to be under threat after research on Wednesday showed women are starting to put physical attractiveness above solvency.

The shift is occurring because women have been freed from the constraints that previously dictated how they chose a mate as they increasingly control their own finances, the study said.

"We are seeing that women who have control over their finances are less concerned with the fiscal status of their potential mates and look more as to how attractive they may be," said one of the authors, Fhionna Moore from University of St Andrews.

The findings, to be published in Evolution and Human Behaviour journal, showed, however, that women who had low levels of financial independence still tended to rate a man's fiscal status above attractiveness.

Moore, a research student, found that as a woman's level of "resource control" changed, so did her preferences.

"It is the control and the independence the money gives rather than the absolute income level that appears to be the key predicting variable," she told Reuters.

An analysis of questionnaires returned by 1,851 heterosexual women aged between 18 and 35 showed women were able to change their attitudes relatively quickly in reaction to their changed financial status.

"We seem capable of changing our preferences in quite a short time which suggest environmental factors rather than inherent traits had a big impact in choice," she said.

"Women are quicker at adapting behaviour than previously thought," added Moore who is attached to the University's psychology department.

In Denver today and tomorrow (Millee stiffed me again with the limo). Hockey game tonight. Remember that situation at work I mentioned a few months ago? It's reared its head again.

Yeah, first it was Legs when I went to San Antonio. Millee has stiffed me about 3 times coming to Denver. Now, when I hit Atlanta in a few weeks, I expect a black limo, with SportsCenter playing and grape kool-aid in the ice bucket.

Yank,

Good to hear from you. I know the feeling, I have been OVERWHELMED with deadlines and committments. Decided to take a break tonight and chill out.

I am having to fight my fans off me as I type this, I have one big old man slobbering all over me right now.

No, I am not in a bar, ... it's my big old (official name I've given him is my new old big little man) yellow labrador retriever that adopted me not so long ago.

If you happen to run into freeper Hair of the Dog on some thread, don't let her know she got me into this, into inviting this guy into my home. She did me a favor -- the more time I spend with this guy, the more I love him.

Listening to some good music tonight -- Buffalo Springfield, and feeling good about some things I got accomplished this week. The stars must be aligned in my favor (if I believed in astrology), because it's been a good, but busy week.

Did some hiking this afternoon in the surrounding woods, and apparently there is some (or one, never claimed to be an expert) bucks frequenting my space. Lots of rubs, and new ones I hadn't seen before. Took the dogs with me, and they think they've been to heaven and back.

I am their official GOD and they would attack a charging elephant if they thought it would benefit me.

The redbuds and dogwoods are showing off down here in the South, the turkeys gobbling/courting, the fish biting. The full moon in April is the ABSOLUTE best fishing of the year, when the majority of bass are on the spawning beds and angry, aggressive.

I have been stuck in front of this computer working, but the fruits of this labor will soon pay off. I have an absolutely wonderful fishing trip planned soon, complete with experienced fishing guide -- good people, a credit to the human race -- and some good drinking (hiccup) and eating planned.

Life can't get any better, and I am happy.

As for turkey hunting, it will also be on the agenda in coming days.

AS for my turkey calling -- I am an embarrassment to the sport, so I'll let an expert do it for me.

Like I said, life is good, it is spring, and hope springs eternal.

Just hearing from you again makes me feel good.

8 hours of that would be draining. I do a lot of conferences but as an exhibitor so at least we're not tied down to endless sessions.

I would never do such a thing!

I want a guy that can fix things around the house - not like Tim in Home Improvements either.

If it breaks I can fix it. Anything from plumbing to floors to appliances to computers. (I've been remodelling the house we live in now for about 16 years. One room at a time down to the studs, replace everything and build it back.)

And I still have all my fingers!

if you have been close enough to Heaven to catch a fish after a battle of wits between you and the beast, you'll never be without joy.

Recently, Anne Bancroft died. It may have seemed odd that such an elegant, beautiful actress was married to a goofy little guy like Mel Brooks, but they had a very happy marriage for a lot of years. I loved the way she described how she felt about him:

"I love hearing his key in the door at night; I know the party's about to start."

There are worse ways to go through life. :)

One last picture.

Something I rarely do, but have to in this case because the girl is just too cute. (I'm not too proud)

A picture of me and my girl.... (promise not to laugh (too loud) my fragile ego couldn't handle it if I heard you.)

I have been really good about curbing my FR addiction lately. Ack, I say that like it is a 'good' thing?!

The only thing that I have been following too much is some of the Venezuela/Chavez issues. Kind of interesting watching a dictatorship progress. If you want on the Hugoping list, let me know!

I love the name of your lab. So he has finally worked his way into your house? Watch out, before you know it, the couch and bed will be HIS! Charlie was never allowed on the couches or anything, now he owns them.

School has been insane, I have my thermodynamics final next Thursday. This is the second time I'm taking this course, and I don't want there to be a third! (If that were the case, I think I'd polish my resume.) Finishing up one more assignment this morning, then REALLY hitting the books solid for the next week.

School has really been overwhelming (largely this course) and has been bumming me out, but these last few weeks I've felt pretty damn good! Actually, a couple weeks ago I was in the lab trying to measure the temp of an experiment I'm running, and I wound up breaking a thermometer and stabbing myself in the hand. I didn't need stitches, but I got to spend about 4 hours in the ER (also my first experience with socialized healthcare). That day started off as being pretty lousy, but when this happened all I could do was laugh about it. Since then, things have really lightened up. I'm surprised I didn't pass out though, honestly!

Were not seeing buds yet, but the weather has been quite nice lately. Today is cooler, and we had some rain which I also like. It officially 'smells like spring'! The water is still frozen, and I hope it stays that way until I am done with my final. Can't wait to get out kayaking, paddling around ice is fun stuff! Doubtful that I'll get out for spring bear though, time and $$. I might go with a friend, and help him skin if he gets one.

Where are you going fishing? Back to TX (Was it Fork Lake)? That would be a great time. I really want to go to the foothills to trout fish, haven't done that in way too long. Wouldn't mind some walleye and pike either.

As for my turkey calling -- I am an embarrassment to the sport, so I'll let an expert do it for me.

I have yet to learn to call ducks and geese. But what a friend of mine told me is that 'a call in the hands of the unskilled is the greatest conservation effort ever'. I really need to learn to call, I imagine that turkey are more difficult than waterfowl too!

Just hearing from you again makes me feel good.

Aww, thanks. You just made my morning!

Any way, I really need to get back to the books. Hopefully things keep going well for both of us.

Hah!

Oh she is just too precious. I love the look on her face in the first picture, what a little darling.

You are a handsome family, the both of you.

Do I detect a touch of red in her hair?

She is a sweetheart. The single most precious person in the world to me.

As for me, I'll be looking for a new wife starting sometime in June. (We lost Autumn's mommy last September and she wanted me to remarry)

As we were having the pictures taken I had this vision of my wallet open and bills just flying out. How can you not get them all when she looks so good?

She tends to be quite mischievous and that pose captures her well. All things considered though she is a very well behaved child.

You are a handsome family, the both of you.

Thank you kindly! Of course I realize that my daughter brings the average way up.

Do I detect a touch of red in her hair?

Perhaps just the slightest trace. She's mostly dark blond but her mommy had reddish highlights in her natural color (auburn?).

I have been blessed in this little girl, she looks like her mommy.
