FReeper Teens Chat
Original | March 29, 2006 | Tax-chick

Posted on 03/29/2006 6:44:49 AM PST by Tax-chick

My daughter "Anoreth" and some of her conservative friends asked me to start a chat thread for them to discuss books, music, guns, education, whichever, and whatall. All young FReepers are welcome to join in.

This thread has the same premise as the "Undead Thread" - general discussion - only with a content level suited to younger people, if you get my drift. If there are many posts, a new thread can be started when the volume starts interfering with the programming.

I'll be stopping by now and then to keep an eye on things. Please read and follow the FR posting guidelines!

Nice to hear from you! Which exams are you taking?

Anoreth is fighting with the internet connection on the other computer, but maybe sometime you can explain how important things like AP exams are, if she wants her college education paid for!

Thanks! The plan is that young people can come and go, as they have time and subjects that interest them.

Is the designer/Hollywood crap infecting kids everywhere? Not quite probably all of the s in my church could care less about Hollywood actors(except maybe the old ones, Jimmy Stewart and the like.) And I know for a fact that most of them make most of their clothes.

;) I'm taking AP American and AP Chemistry this year. They're challenging, but worth while. I must admit, I'm a total chem nerd now...

To Anoreth: colleges LOVE AP students. It shows that you can handle a high work load and have a strong work ethic. Plus, if you get a 4 or 5 on the exams, you can opt out of those classes in college! That's a lot of money off- you don't have to pay for the class, textbooks, yadda yadda. I can be a sophomore by the end of the first semester of freshman year.

As to costs, I want to go to Wespoint, which pays you to go there, but it's the smart ones that get the National Merit scholarships, etc.I've got 4 sibs, you've got more than that, and there's no chance in Heaven above or Hell below that my parents are paying my way through college. So don't bum around in high school! Even if it is sunny and warm and you're sitting in double chem at 3:00 after nearly an hour and a half and all you're thinking about is playing football with your friends...

Have a useful exchange with RedBeacon about *working hard* in high school, please ...

Oy, that's good to hear. I live in a totally affluent town that's up on all of the latest gadgets and into $100 jeans, etc... BUT I'm moving up to Sandpoint, Idaho this summer (google it, it's beautiful) and it's going to be fantastic (and hopefully a wee bit humbler).

Good luck on the tests! I took History back in 1983, but not Chemistry ... faked my way through one year of that. My teacher was a WW1 vet, and he taught us to make phosgene, but that's the only thing I remember.

I've always wondered what good a high school education would do me... I will never use anything I've learned in math this year, for example. Who cares about polar graphs? Hyperbolae?

You're one lucky lady to have had a vet for a teacher... So how do you make phosgene?

I'm supposed to have a useful exchange with you about high school.

It's incredibly boring, except history and religion, which are better than the other years. In my opinion.

Chlorine and ammonia ... two common household cleaning products. They only had to evacuate half the school :-).

My husband had to take about 6 semesters of college math for his engineering degree, but it doesn't seem particularly useful in computer networking. Sometimes I think they just like to make you jump through a lot of hoops to show that you're compliant.

I should try that sometime.

Outside, in the woods. I can buy my own mask thing. The KKK's can help. She'll be thrilled.

Fascinating stuff, history and religion. Especially if you like to debate. But never debate religion, because you're never going to change anybody's mind- except maybe your own. Personally, I'm a language geek. I've taken every language my school has to offer... and the school I will be going to offers German!

You're homeschooled, I assume? No place I know teaches religion. Then again, I'm in the liberal mecca of NY.

LOL. Another good one is a 50/50 mixture of bleach and urine... put it into a glass bottle with a foil lid in the fridge for 24 hours, you've got a nerve agent!

Yes, I am. That's how I got Catholic religion courses. I finished mine in about a week.

I like reading about the Protestant Revolt best.
