FOX buying DialIdol, Vote for the Worst, and reality TV blogs to promote American Idol
This satirical story is part of the April 1, 2006 edition of reality blurred.
News Corp., continuing to acquire popular online properties, has purchased American Idol-focused sites DialIdol and Vote for the Worst. The sites will be folded into the companys MySpace community once the checks clear and/or FOX Security finishes their friendly visits with the web sites owners.
The plan, a FOX spokesperson said, is to let MySpace community members edit DialIdol and Vote for the Worsts web sites with Thomas MySpace Editor, thus making the sites illegible and impossible to visit. Were positive that, once the text is fluorescent green on a background thats an animated gif, and a Scott Savol song blares at top volume the second the page loads, no one will want to visit any more. Theyll be too busy having seizures. The threat will be neutralizedI mean, the fans will have control, the spokesperson said.
The network is also acquiring seven unnamed reality TV-focused blogs, particularly those that post incoherent, poorly written recaps of FOX shows. Specifically, those that have journalism-sounding words in their URLs and regularly post press releases verbatim are being targeted. A FOX VP told reporters, Its so great to know that these blogs truly understand journalism and critical analysis. These are smart people, copying and pasting our press releases and posting them in order to sell Google ads, sneak into Google News, and inflate their BlogAds pageviews.
It makes perfect sense since theyre already basically an extension of our marketing departments. Now, well be able to get our propagandaI mean, assetsin front of more eyeballs. I love new media, he said. The exec also said that theres another positive effect. With all the time and resources we spend trying to keep Paula Abdul away from the male contestants, we just dont have time to read blogs any more to find out which contestants we need to build up or tear down.
Other networks are planning similar acquisitions, afraid their shows will suffer in the ratings without the attention of blogs. Networks have also convented task forces and ad hoc committees to study other new trends like podcasting, clicking on links, and watching shows that dont suck.
I call middles!!!
I only use my cell phone to vote. Most people 50 and under have cellphones these days.
Why? Because my cell phone is quicker when redialing and my landline is tied up with my dial-up ISP. (dial-up ISP is my only choice here in my rural area.)
I voted at least 250 times last week with my cell. I can get in at least 6 votes in during a period of one minute with my cellphone. I know I could get more in if I didn't listen to the guy say "Thanks for voting for contestant X"
I will be power voting each week now.
Wow, you're hardcore. The most I've voted for any individual was 50 times. I just find it so boring ... you can't read or anything while you're voting. (At least I can't; my fingers get mixed up! LOL!)
You guys HAVE to give us sufficient advance warning if you do post "Ballsy Barbie" -- oops, sorry, I meant "Redneck Barbie" -- on one of those forums. We all should get to watch the fun!

Pickler needs to sing something that isn't too difficult vocally but has some bounce to it. Maybe "Whose Bed Have Your Boots Been Under"(early Shania Twain before it was ALL about the video.) In a different vein "Someday Soon"(Suzy Bogguss) might work for Pickler, but I doubt she has the vocal chops for that one.
I'd like to hear Katharine sing "Help Me Make It Through the Night"(Sammi Smith) or maybe "A Soft Place to Fall"(Allison Moorer).
Mandisa would kill with "Stop Me"(early Shelby Lynne), but I'm not sure if they would allow that one even though Shelby Lynne was considered a country artist back then.
Paris--sticking with early Shelby Lynne, Paris would do well
with something like "Restless" or "Slow Me Down".
Ace--I think he could do a decent job with "This Is the Way We Make a Broken Heart"(Roseanne Cash).
I'd like to hear Elliott sing "Mud on the Tires"(Brad Paisley). Not a vocal challenge but a fun song which would help Elliott.
Bucky--I think he'd have fun with "Turn It On, Turn It Up, Turn Me Loose"(Dwight Yoakum) or "If You've Got the Money, Honey"(Lefty Frizzell).
Chris could probably put his alternative rock anthem spin on "A Thousand Miles from Nowhere"(Yoakum).
Taylor should sing "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry"(Hank Williams the Greater).
Someone could be 'whats_a_ballsy', or 'taRantula', or 'fake_eyelashes' or 'saLmon', or 'sleazy_prom_dress' or 'calamari', 'shes_a_phony', 'whats_a_minx'etc.
If we go at the same time to post, it might keep the webmaster busy for a few minutes, trying to decided which posts to pull first! lol
Not me, I voted two solid hours for Taylor! :)
Does Paula have a blog? /sarcasm
Isn't this kinda childish or a DU-ish?
The Redneck Barbie things was funny, but doing what some of you are talking about is a waste of time for few cheap laughs.
Do what you must... but this type of stuff should not even be discussed on FR or on the FR Idol thread.
Not sure about them performing something by the Mavericks. Malo(like Orbison) has an ethereal quality to his voice that adds a lot to the Mavericks' songs. I like the Mavericks' version of "All the Heaven Would Allow" even better than Springsteen's. I think the Mavericks are great, but the Mavericks without Malo--not so great.
While I'm on the subject of what probably shouldn't be done, everyone should steer clear of bluegrass(although Taylor would have an excellent voice for it) because there's no way the Idol house band could pull it off.
It's meant in good natured fun. Was it childish and DU-ish when people on the AI thread took cheap shots at Kevin calling him Chicken Little and posting pics of Chicken Little? If not, then how is it different?
Good point! In fact, I was wondering if bluegrass, rockabilly, country blues, country rock etc., all fall into country or not? I would think they would, but shoot, don't the lines get kind of blurred at some point?
:0) I still just love him. Thanks for the pic. :)

Hey Wolf...
Put a red bowtie on him and slick back his hair (leave the suit and his weird moves) and guess who you have...
PEE WEE HERMAN.
Coldplay had No. 1 world album in 2005
("Breakaway" by "American Idol" winner Kelly Clarkson came in at No. 7).
