New Jersey in Top 5 States When it Comes to Bad Air
Millennium Radio ^ | March 23, 2006 | By: Janet Fried

According to a recent report by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, New York and California have the worst air in the nation followed by Oregon, Washington, D.C. and New Jersey. The report says Wyoming, South Dakota and Montana have the cleanest air in the country. The report is based on emissions of 177 chemicals in 1999, the most recent data available. The report says people in the states with the dirtiest air face a higher cancer risk.

The New Jersey Sierra Club's Jeff Tittel says one reason New Jersey has poor air quality is because of pollution from power plants in Ohio blowing here. He says Jersey industries, all the development and all the cars are also to blame. Tittel says Jersey has a high rate of asthma and other respiratory problems because of the poor air. He says the state needs to clean up the power plants and factories, develop better mass transportation so there aren't so many cars on the road, and eliminate sprawl.

The Assistant Director of the Division of Air Quality for the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Chris Salmi says New Jersey is the most densely populated state in the nation and so its no surprise that with more cars on the roads, the air is very polluted.

Salmi says there are a number of efforts underway to try and fix the problem. He says the state is using cleaner cars, the state recently adopted a diesel retrofit measure, and the state will be addressing pollution from drycleaning businesses. Salmi says the state is looking at a number of control measures to help it meet the ozone standards and the fine particle standards.

Salmi says for more information you can go to www.state.nj.us/dep.

I'll bet that there is a high correlation between enviowackos and this list. But they are always blaming someone else, Detroit ot Ohio, for instance. Why don't they just take the problem head on and clean up the air?

That would infringe on Torricelli's Superfund deals.

Dog bites man.

Move along, there's nothing to see here -- and besides you can't see it because the air is so thick.

I remember smells, drving up the NJ Turnpike (what exit?) from passing the chemical plants and oil tank farms/refineries, that made me wretch. And it was moving west to east, with the winds. Ahhhhh, Joisey!

Since moving to Penna, years ago, the worst thing I've smelled is horse manure. At least that's tolerable.

yea, but we have the best hospitals in the country so we will live longer in the long run.... I see NJ ranks in the top 5 in other areas, some good some bad.  I still think we live in one of the better parts of the country being so close to the shore,  the Appalachian mountains and NYC.  We have the best food too.

N.J. hospitals No. 1 in four key areas
N.J. has last laugh: No. 5 in livability
"A little about New Jersey or as some outsiders say New Joisey"
Roller coaster of memories (Palisades Amusement Park)
Cutting the mustard (Welcome to wiener country)
njfarms

Top 5 in livability and #1 in hospitals all in one week.
and we have more republicans in NJ than some states' total population.

2nd Amendment Rights, clean air, nice people, low(er) taxes, less-corrupt pols (not by much), wide-open spaces, clean water, fewer homo-sodomite-lesbos, upwind of next Ground Zero, no NJ Turnpike or GS Parkway (what exit you from?), fewer NY-NJ Mafia, et al...

What's not to like about Penna? We're a Conservative Red State, with two Blue Cities (Philly & Pittsburgh), who skew the vote, that the terrorists will hopefully NUKE, and return us to Red State status.

When the BS 'global warming' raises sea levels, we'll be oceanfront property. Ha!

What's not to like?

New Jersey has the best blueberries and very good corn.

The communists who control the politics in NJ will use this air pollution report to tax, tax, tax, and spend, spend, spend.
