Terre Haute, IN (Sports Network) - The Indianapolis Colts reportedly agreed to terms with placekicker Adam Vinatieri on Tuesday.
According to a report on ESPN, the contract could be made official on Tuesday night.
Considered to be the best clutch kicker in the history of the game, Vinatieri will be replacing the most accurate field goal kicker in NFL history, Mike Vanderjagt, in Indianapolis.
Vinatieri is best known for connecting on the winning field goals in two of the New England Patriots' three Super Bowl victories.
The 33-year-old Vinatieri has converted 263 of 321 field goal attempts and 367 of 374 extra point tries in 160 career games, all with the Patriots.

Ouch! This one hurts!
Aieeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee, noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
LOL
I would be willing to bet that Vinatieri makes that kick against the Squeelers :)
Why in the world would NE let him go?
IIRC, they can keep him (I assume he is a free agent) if they match the highest offer.
A great kicker is good for 2 or 3 games + at least 1 playoff game.
I think that the thinking in NE was that he was too much of a hit against the salary cap. He was making a lot of money, and I think the prevailing thought--true or not--is that kickers are a dime a dozen.
who hoo
Meanwhile, there are rumors that Miami might release Olindo Mare. Say it isn't so!
They're breaking up that old gang of mine. :(
Well, it was good while it lasted. (Sounds of gut-wrenching sobbing...)
Exactly! Now, would you please fire off a memo to Parcells to that effect? Olindo Mare, Vanderjagt, and Josh Brown are all possibilities for the Cowboys, and they must ink one imo.
And if Tom Brady ever gets Peyton Manning disease, you can bet that the Patriots will let him go as well.
The Indianapolis Colts are already paying Peyton Manning an obscene amount of money (relative to the percentage of salary cap). By adding the high-priced Vinatieri, there will be that much less money to pay the rest of the players. As a result, the Colts will likely never get past the 1st or 2nd round of the playoffs.
I can't add anything to that.
UNGH
What happened to Vanderjagt?
"I think that the thinking in NE was that he was too much of a hit against the salary cap. He was making a lot of money, and I think the prevailing thought--true or not--is that kickers are a dime a dozen."
The Pats offered him the highest contract ever for a kicker, despite him being the 20th ranked kicker in the NFL last year...The Dolts exceeded that by $500K a year.
Good luck with Shaky Peyton come playoff time Adam!!!
He missed the kick that mattered.
No McGinest and no Vinatieri? Will Tom Brady still be a Patriot in September?
So the Patriots didn't bring enough money to the table. Like I said--seems like they didn't think he was worth the salary cap hit.
Sorry for 'em.
