A 25-year-old man is in critical condition after he was shot during a robbery Saturday in Minneapolis' Uptown area. Police said the man, whose identity was not released, and his mother, sister and a friend were walking to their car when two men approached them about 9:55 p.m. in the 3100 block of Girard Avenue S. in the Carag neighborhood. The group had just come from a restaurant at Lake Street and Hennepin Avenue.
Police said the suspects demanded the mother's purse. She obliged and there was no struggle or resistance, but one suspect then shot the man, police said.
Inspector Kris Arneson, who oversees the Fifth Precinct where the shooting occurred, said the suspects fled on foot and may have then gotten into a white car. No detailed descriptions of the suspects or car were available.
Police don't know if the robbery is linked to others.
"The situation is grave," Arneson said of the man's condition, adding that it's unusual for robbery suspects to shoot their victims.
Robberies have increased 39 percent citywide in the first 2½ months of 2006 compared with the same time last year, according to statistics released last week. There were 100 robberies reported in the Fifth Precinct this year compared with 60 at this time last year, Arneson said. A robbery task force is investigating the crimes, and patrols have been stepped up, she said.
Safety tips from police include traveling in groups, parking in lighted areas, carrying a cell phone, avoiding intoxication and not fighting back.

banning leafblowers is more important to most local pols in MPLS.
Remember, this is an area that is chock full of nuts. This is the most liberal portion on the Twin Cities. Represented by the most liberal law makers in the state.
The bad guys are increasingly getting their payday in up town for one reason: NOBODY IS CARRYING PERSONAL PROTECTION. The residents of Uptown don't like guns. They are represented by lawmakers who don't like guns and voted AGAINST the MCPPA TWICE. Thank the Lord it passed without them so that those of us that "get it" in regards to crime in the Twin Cities can make a personal difference in saving our lives and the lives of our loved ones.
Lets see, they were traveling in a group and they did not fight back yet he still got shot.
right on brutha.
I know you listened to the same afternoon radio show I did, today. Did you catch the news break where this story was covered and the had a voicer from an Uptown business owner?
He said that more police and enforcement wouldn't solve the surge in crime. "These people (gangbangers) need to look to a higher power and change".
That'll happen.
