Pit bull maulings of 2 kids brings $150 fine
Chicago Tribune ^ | March 8, 2006 | Carolyn Starks

Seconds after two neighborhood children selling Girl Scout candy rapped on the door, three pit bulls sleeping on a couch inside Scott Sword's house went crazy, barking madly as they charged outside, Sword said Wednesday.

Two dogs bolted through the open door, but Sword tackled the third dog, a 100-pounder who nearly severed his thumb. The dog dragged him out the door on his abdomen, he said.

Thirty minutes of terror followed as the frenzied dogs repeatedly charged across the neighborhood, mauling four adults and the two children.

"It went from all is quiet to all hell breaking loose," Sword said Wednesday in a tearful account of the attacks near Cary on Nov. 5.

The usual storyline, as the owner has no clue why his Pit Bulls snapped...

The dullard behind me had at one point 8 of these dogs. They killed they got into a fight and one died. Animal control cited them. The city only allows 4 pets.

--And, of course--no one in Chicago had a gun to shoot and kill these animals before they did so much damage.

BTW, isn't it amazing when people are surprised and shocked when pit bulls do what pit bulls are bred to do?

I don't own any dogs, because I don't want dogs. But why am I forced to accommodate my neighbors dogs. The barking, the poop, the smell. Why am I a bad person (ask dog lovers) because I want live in a quiet, clean environment. If I wanted poop all over my yard I would get a dog and feed him ex-lax chocolate bars. If I wanted to hear yapping dogs, I could get a recording of dogs and play it all the time. Why is mandated that I put up with the active intrusion of other peoples bad habits, while my lack of intrusion is seen as the most scorned behavior.

I don't know where you live, but most places have laws regulating barking dogs. If the dogs deposit their excrement in your yard, collect it and leave it on your neighbor's porch.

Many people like owning dogs. If your neighbor's dogs encroach on your property, then you have legal recourse. Other than that, you do not.

Thanks for the reply..but, the pooping and yapping nuisance you endure is different than the maulings by this fighting breed. The kid spent six weeks in the hospital! Back on topic...

I know the feeling. I worry about my beagle every day, fearing he will get out and terrorize the neighborhood.

This appears to be a recent horror show with pit bulls. If so, it is the third time a pickup has come to the rescue. It's hard to imagine how the pickup driver got them herded back into the house, and I read another case similer to this one, herding the dogs like that, not local.

Locally a lady jogger got attacked a couple years ago now, and a pickup owner grabbed a shovel and beat off the dog(s), think there were two who had gotten loose from a house in the adjacent town 3 or so miles away, long enough to get the lady with serious injuries into his truck and get her to thr ER.

Another girl was killed in a rural area, and there have been at least two instances of police having to shoot pit bulls in the last year or so, plus another one involving a child. The details of that one escape me.

And there was another bad one in my town, involved serious injuries, I think this was the one where the lady had half her face torn off, and the further outrage of that one is that the female owner had been cited before and because she didn't have anything to lose materially or financially (renter), failed to comply with the law, and probably got off again, just lost her dogs.

Now a couple years ago, I stopped at the gas station, and there were three or more little black kids selling I think it was four of the cutest puppies for $20 apiece. I stopped to ask what kind they were and pet them. Pit bulls. It was sad, but I felt like buying all four and taking them to the shelter to have them euthanized. But I didn't. They seemed like such innocent, friendly, playful little puppies, and I love animals.

I own 2 dogs. I also despise owners who allow their dogs to bark, particularly at night. I also despise owners who let their dogs poop on other people's property.

And I REALLY DESPISE people who own mean dogs.

Same topic, different result. For some astonishing reason it is considered normal for humans and wild animals to co-exist. I just don't get it. The dogs I put up with would maul you, if they could. They just have smaller jaws. That is the only difference.

But why am I forced to accommodate my neighbors dogs.

I have that, too, and just put up with it. They were a young couple and it is good to get along. My daughter got more ticked off about it than I did. And it cried. But they got good, without my complaining, not to let it yap too long. I know there are other neighbors around here who will not tolerate that. I can tolerate some things for awhile so long as it doesn't go on for hours and keep me awake at night.

I would rather put up with that than have my grandchildren mauled by a pit bull which is a very real fear now; I am also in fear of my own life when I go outside, especially in remote areas where I like to take photographs. I don't like to go too far from my car. My one granddaughter got bitten on the leg by a golden retriever when she came with me to see about it's owner I was helping after surgery. I really had to pussyfoot around that dog, but had to take it out and put on a chain until he got well enough to do it. I didn't *have* to do it.

I always look for a car to climb onto and don't know what failsafe weapon to carry along. My girlfriend got attacked by a German Shepherd who ripped a chunk out of her leg. She got away from it by climing on the roof of a parked car.

My sister in law wants one.

Her and my brother have 4 children ranging in age from 2 to 10.

I simply asked her why she hated her kids so much?

Yep, that's what I hear everytime we see a story like this. These are peaceful loving dogs, these events almost never happen.

Until the next time.

They were just doing what pit bulls do best; attack! And they were just doing attacks that no other dog wanted to do!

I think dangerous breeds of dogs--like Pit Bulls--should be outlawed.
