Why Saint Patrick's Day?

Saint Patrick's Day has come to be associated with everything Irish: anything green and gold, shamrocks and luck. Most importantly, to those who celebrate its intended meaning, St. Patrick's Day is a traditional day for spiritual renewal and offering prayers for missionaries worldwide.

So, why is it celebrated on March 17th? One theory is that that is the day that St. Patrick died. Since the holiday began in Ireland, it is believed that as the Irish spread out around the world, they took with them their history and celebrations. The biggest observance of all is, of course, in Ireland. With the exception of restaurants and pubs, almost all businesses close on March 17th. Being a religious holiday as well, many Irish attend mass, where March 17th is the traditional day for offering prayers for missionaries worldwide before the serious celebrating begins.

In American cities with a large Irish population, St. Patrick's Day is a very big deal. Big cities and small towns alike celebrate with parades, "wearing of the green," music and songs, Irish food and drink, and activities for kids such as crafts, coloring and games. Some communities even go so far as to dye rivers or streams green!

Yah, but it's not current, though. Maybe I'll save it for when the movie comes out.

I can't decide which part of Office Space I like the best. The part where the psychiatrist dropped dead during group therapy was good. The part where the main character was telling the people who were there to cut employees that he was a big goof-off and they promoted him was good. The goofy boss was good.

The guy whose picture you posted was good. The main character's neighbor was good.

It goes on and on...

The scene where they beat the printer to death, that's one of my favorites.

I watched the British verison before the American version, so my view was already tainted and I never got into the US one.

Oh, but the American version has evolved extraordinarily and is a COMPLETELY different show from the British version.

That was a great scene!

I keep telling people to rent that movie. Nobody listens to me, but if they do they will be raving about it too.

"The Office" was a hit British comedy. After the show ended, some NBC execs decided to try and make an American version. The new version is extremely funny, but it had very poor ratings at first. Now that it's been on air awhile, it's gained more ratings and has become a hit.

Thursdays at 9:30.

They've taken the concept in completely new directions.

Funny, there was a British version of Sanford and Son called Steptoe and Son before Sanford ever came out.

I haven't watched any mainstream TV in about 30 years.

"Taxi" was the last mainstream show I watched. Andy Kaufman as "Latka".

Here is the American version's web site.

Barb, don't watch it this week; they're showing a rerun from the beginning of the first season when it was still a copy of the British version. You'd have to wait for a new episode to really appreciate it.
