A contest to see who could get Windows XP working first on an Intel Mac has been won, according to the contests coordinator, Colin Nederkoorn. The Windows XP on an Intel Mac page provides a link to a download that includes software and instructions for use.
Nederkoorn first put the contest together after he ordered an Intel-based MacBook Pro for work.
I told my boss that this would replace my IBM desktop and I could boot Windows XP on it, he said, and to put his money where his mouth was, he put up $100. He suggested that others with an interest in seeing a dual-boot Macintosh do the same.
To date, the contest has raised over $13,854 in donations, including significant additions from Digital Express, Delicious Monster and Uneasy Silence. Nederkoorn says that any further donations will go to support an open source project created to maintain the work thats already been done.
News that Windows XP was working natively on an Intel-based iMac first came to light several days ago, when two enterprising users who go by the monikers narf2006 and blanka posted pictures to an account on the Flickr photoblogging service purportedly showing Windows being installed on the system. A video followed, and the solution has since been verified by Nederkoorn and his testers.
Getting Windows XP to work on the Mac is not a plug and play process. According to the documentation included with the file download provided on Nederkoorns Web site, users must create an install CD themselves using a PC equipped with a CD-R drive, Microsofts Windows XP SP 2 CD-ROM and Nero CD burning software. Step by step instructions for creating the disc are included.

It would be more useful to get MAC OS working on a PC........
in other news, a hobbyist has managed to fit a retired f-4 phantom with a 130-horsepower continental prop engine . . .
Really don't like that headline. There was only one hacker: narf2006. And he pocketed almost $14K for his work. Not bad at all.
Cue the people wondering why one would want to install Windows on a Mac in the first place.
Also more illegal.
Where did he put the prop? on the rear?..........
If Apple had any sense they'd release a MAC OS for PC's. Unless they're afraid of MS lawsuits.........
Already done. It violates the OS X EULA (which I don't care about), hardware support will be flaky, and you'll probably have to repatch with every OS X point update.
Then it's not that much different than Windows..........
Competing directly with Microsoft in the OS market has not been a winning strategy; see OS/2, Be, and NeXT.
Apple did this years ago. They licensed Mac OS to the clone market and let third party PC manufacturers sell machines with the OS preinstalled.
It bombed so badly that Apple had to bring Steve Jobs back to save the company.
Needless to say, you will not be installing Mac OS X on a PC (legally) anytime soon. Just buy the iMac and put Windows on it.
Ping
That'd be like putting low rider wheels on a Jag........
No, it wouldn't. The computer is a tool. Use it as you need it.
If you really don't want to "sully" the Mac with a Windows install, just get a low-cost Windows PC. Problem solved.
It's not the platform that's the problem. It's the OS. I'm so tired of fighting the Windows OS everytime I install a new program or hardware item. It's frustrating to un-install and re-install and on and on..............My Apple friends tell me they have no such problems..........
Again: don't install Windows on your Mac. Problem solved. 99.9% of the people who buy Macs will not install Windows, either. The 0.1% of the people who do will know what they're doing and as such will not have any problems.
Paranoia level DOWN!
yeah. a pusher f-4 with a reciprocating engine. very effective at blowing papers and leaves off the taxiway. doesn't fly, though.
It really depends. If you're having a rough time with XP, you may as well try a Mac out. The Mac is generally easier to use for a variety of reasons, but if it ain't broke, don't fix it.
