Over the past few days, Infinite Loop has been following developments which seemed to indicate that a workable solution for installing Windows XP on Apple's Intel-based computers had been developed. Reactions were, at first, mixed. Most people, jaded by months of fakery on just about every hot Apple rumor imaginable, dismissed the solution out of hand, but those who had been following the progress of the author of this particular hack were fairly confident that he had sealed the deal.
For those unaware, a website titled Windows XP on Mac has been collecting a pool of donations for anyone who could successfully boot Windows XP on an unmodified Intel Mac. The pool grew slowly at first, but as the news of the contest spread, it passed the US$13,000 mark. The first hint that "narf" may have figured it out came in the form of a set of photos on Flickr that seemed to show Windows XP on an iMac of some sort. Next came the videos and an acknowledgement from the contest administrators that a solution had been submitted. And finally, this morning, onmac.net announced that a proposed solution had been found and had been tested successfully. The contest had been won, and it looks like "narf" is about to almost US$14,000 richer.

A macPing heads-up.
Would MAC users really want to run WinXP?
I thought the whole point was that they were in love with the MAC OS?
Well, there are those who LOVE Macs, and those who simply prefer using them to other options. It's the best of both worlds for folks who like the Mac OS but have business or gaming programs that are PC-only.
Plus it's the only machine in the world that boots Mac OS, Linus, and Windows native. That's gonna net some kudos in the geeksphere. ;)
Linus? Argh...
Exactly. Dual boot, triple boot, blah, blah, blah...the operative words here are boot. Why would I want to reboot to run anouther O/S to support some perticular software? You would think that the idea would be to have a single O/S that runs any software transparently regardless of the intended O/S. Unix - Irix preferred
Why would anyone want a missile that flies without a warhead? Nobody, unless it's a demonstration flight working toward a production model. Then First Flight, which flies with an inert warhead, is a significant milestone. It demonstrates that flight control systems are all functioning properly.
Everyone wants what you describe as a final result; that IS the idea. We get there in small steps, not in one great leap. This is a very important proof-of-concept demonstration.

Possibly because most games run on Windows, and games are the most performance intensive applications. Emulation isn't going to cut it.
Thanks to GOP Jedi for the heads up...

If Apple doesn't put in a blocker of some sort, and they've said they won't, this will send some shock waves through Dell, Gateway, and other PC makers. Apple's share of the market was already climbing, and if people know they can run Windows on the Mac, a lot of people sitting on the fence will be more likely to try one out, knowing they can turn it into a PC if they wish. Most won't, but it provides a good security blanket for the Linus and PC users.
Please ping me when someone boots OSX on a Dell. Now that would be a "Man bites dog" story...
Isn't this kinda like buying a Ferrari and putting a Yugo motor in it?
