I detest the media's fascination with covering live, and in great detail, the rape and murder of pretty women (Inspiration for rant, current live coverage of the sentencing hearing, on ALL news channels, of Joseph Smith's penalty hearing).
They have been describing the torture and rape of a little girl in Florida for 45 minutes now, with a split screen showing her sweet picture while they describe everything this monster did to her.
This is perverted voyeurism pretending to be righteous outrage and I see right through it.
I'm damn tired of it. I'm sick because the media, and I presume a large segment of their audience, laps up this stuff... Carlie Brucia, Natalie Holloway, Laci Peterson, Jon Benet Ramsey.... on and on and on.
Covering these trials, and lapping up these details has become a major form of entertainment. Resist this temptation to pour over details too vile to show on regular TV. Immersing yourself in the real life rape, mutilation, and murder of pretty girls is NOT A HEALTHY FORM OF ENTERTAINMENT.
I would support lotsa coverage of the mentioned "pretty girl" deaths if they ALSO cared as much about the poor inner city black girl or the pudgy hispanic boy who gets raped and murdered everyday. It is pure racism/classism that the media cares about Laci but not every other murdered mom across this country.
I can see both sides of this debate. On the one hand, when stories such as the rape and murder of a child comes on the news, I change the channel. I can't watch any stories about a child being victimized. I don't see movies where a child being raped, molested, kidnapped, whatever, is the central theme, and there's alot of those out there.
On the other hand, I do think the parents of children that let them run around unsupervised should see the news stories. I disagree with ya on this one, Hair. I see small children walking to school, riding their bikes, playing up and down the street, unsupervised, all the time. My parents live in an old neighborhood that isn't as nice as it used to be and it's crawling with registered sex offenders. A couple of weeks ago, my dad was sitting outside on the porch and 2 little girls were walking down the street, by themselves. Back aways following them, was a man. My dad watched the girls until they got home, the man following them turned down another street when the girls reached their destination.
One of the worst stories was little Amber Hagerman, the girl that the "Amber Alert" was named after. She was riding her bike, alone with her little brother, when she was kidnapped and subsequently murdered. This happened a few miles where I used to live years ago.

Carlie Bruscia was an eleven year old child; she was not the stereotypical (if there is such a thing) murder victim.
I see your point, but I don't want more coverage just to give fairness to the pudgy and ugly victims...
The point is, disappearances and murders are LOCAL stories, not NATIONAL stories.
"having heard every disgusting thing he did to that girl, all the while juxtaposed with her picture?"
Thanks for the warning, Hair. I will NOT turn on the news today, if that's what they are showing. I don't need to see it.
I agree. The teacher/student sex stories are of the same caliber.
It was sickening to hear, but I am glad his sentencing was televised.
There's been repeat after repeat of very public oversensationalism of murdered little kids. Think back.
It's crass pursuit of the least common denominator. Look at what A&E or Discovery or TLC puts on the tube now.

Wow...I thought I was the only one that noticed this. The dinosaur media is not the only one to blame either...do we REALLY need multiple "Natalee Holloway Extended Discussion Threads"? I think its up to 19 different threads already.
So, if we ignore it, it will go away?
I totally disagree. I think we ought to be exposed to ALL the details. Exposed to the point that we can't sleep at night, and are sickened every day by it. Exposed to the point that we DEMAND that the courts and judges and juries and legislatures DO SOMETHING MEANINGFUL TO STOP IT.
And if that means HANGING THE CREEPS FROM LAMPOSTS AND LETTING THE CROWS PICK THEIR EYES OUT, then LET'S DO IT!
I for one hope kids will always have childhoods where they are allowed to play outside. I don't think it's more dangerous than it ever was, but I don't know how to gauge how a parent should decide. There's got to be a smart happy medium between paranoia and negligence. The guy walking may have been doing just that.
You think little kids should hear all these details?
Great way to live... is it only sex perversion we should be immersed in, or every form of human frailty and suffering?

Good advice.. We can over-immerse ourselves in anything... even politics...
Yes I do,. When my kids where young I took them to a pig killin, it was a wide awakeing of what a gun and knife was capable of.After seeing the kill and the blood from the bleeding out they knew exactley what guns and knives are for.
