Hypocrites at "South Park" and Showtime

Catholic League president Bill Donohue commented today on the news that Isaac Hayes has quit South Park because of an episode that attacked his religion, the Church of Scientology:
It is nothing short of amazing to read that South Park co-creator Matt Stone is now charging Isaac Hayes with intolerance and bigotry for not complaining earlier about all the shows South Park did making fun of Christians. Forget about Hayesthe real issue here is the two-faced, super-bratty response from Stone. For him to lecture Hayes on intolerance and bigotry is on the order of John Gotti lecturing Curtis Sliwa on ethics. After all, it was on South Park last year that they depicted the Virgin Mary spraying blood from her vagina. How would Stone know anything about tolerance?
And now we learn that Stone and his buddy Trey Parker were moved to take a shot at Scientology because they were ticked off that their equally foul-mouthed friend, Penn Jillette, was banned from ripping Scientology on his crude Showtime series, Bulls - - t. Forget about Stone and Parkerthe real issue here is the cowardly, hypocritical response from Jillette. Last year, Jillette went on a rampage against Mother Teresa calling her Mother F- - king Teresa. Yet this same big oaf hasnt got the guts to slam Scientologists for fear of upsetting his bigoted boss, Sumner Redstone (he is chairman of Viacom, which owns Showtime). As for Redstone, he wrote to me last August defending Jillettes assault on Mother Teresa saying we as an organization are committed to artistic freedom. Not when it comes to Scientologiststheir penchant for filing lawsuits scares the daylights out of him.
What does it take to get the New York-Hollywood gang to stop with their Catholic bashing? Threats of beheadings? Threats of lawsuits? Seems that way. What ever happened to common decency?

"South Park" became an instant hit after its original animated short in the late 1990s depicted Jesus in a fierce battle against Santa Claus over the meaning of Christmas.Curious that you should say that because that was my first and last "South Park" episode (I didn't watch it all) since I knew that this just wasn't for me.

Exactly. Donahue is really showing how dense he is, as, in a way, Stone is on his side in this. Stone is pointing out Hayes' hypocrisy and, as South Park is so adept at doing, using the familiar jargon of the polically correct - "intolerance and bigotry" - to hammer home the point.
Donahue needs to shut his pie hole about Stone (and I'm a life-long Catholic).

"This is 100 percent having to do with his faith of Scientology. ... He has no problem and he's cashed plenty of checks with our show making fun of Christians." ... He said he and co-creator Trey Parker "never heard a peep out of Isaac in any way until we did Scientology. He wants a different standard for religions other than his own, and to me, that is where intolerance and bigotry begin." Don't dish it out if you can't take it, Chef. South Park has made fun of every religion on the planet over the last several years, and Hays was OK with it. It's bad enough that he's willing to trash other religions for money, and then duck out when his own ox gets gored, but to sanctimoniously condemn Parker and Stone for being intolerant is off the charts in hypocracy and chutzpah.

Actually, I think there was a Fatwa against Stone and Parker because of a Mohammad portrayal.

It'd take revocation of free speech. I'd rather keep the free speech and accept that all religions and philosophies, including agnosticism and atheism, can be ridiculed without fear of legal reprisals or violence. And maybe, just maybe, develop a sense of humor.

'Dude, we totally love working with you, and this is nothing personal, it's just we're South Park, and if we don't do this, we're belittling everything else we've ripped on.'"Donohue doesn't get it. South Park only disrespects you if they DON'T smack down on you. Besides, that episode wasn't about disrespecting Mary, it was about the idiots who see apparitions in everything from french toast to highway overpasses. (For the record, I believe in Marian Apparitions, but not most of the idiot claims.)

Hayes should be thanking Stone and Parker for revitalizing his career.
Other than an overrated motion picture music score, (Let's be real: The only reason why "Shaft" was a hit is because of the intoxicating beat; Hayes only sings one or two verses in the entire song) and being the "Duke" in Escape from New York, what else has Hayes done? Without these credits he's just your typical left-wing black activist.

Was that the Super Best Friends episode, which also featured Buddha, Krishna, and Joseph Smith?
