GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Truck driver John Withers admits he cried like a little girl when his dog ran away.
So the Georgia man didn't hesitate to make the 1,000 drive to Oconto County, Wis., when he heard his beloved pet had been found eight months later.
He said he didn't cry but he was very happy when he was reunited with Sir Charles Nugget, a 4-year-old chow mix.
Nugget ran away last summer when Withers was making a delivery in Lena, Wis. Since then, plenty of people spotted the dog and left food for it but no one could catch it.
The local animal control officer called Withers to tell him a dog that had been hanging around town lately looked like it could be Nugget. It turns out it was.
Withers said he's grateful to everyone who had a part in the happy ending.

When I saw "man crying like a little girl" I thought this was another David Gregory story.
Yes, a good story. I used to work for a trucking company and the drivers there would often go 1000 miles out of route to see their girlfriend(s), assorted lot lizards, and their wives. Usually in that order.

Then Withers got a phone call from Judy Fuller, the animal control officer in Little Suamico. She told him local folks were sure Nugget was the dog that had been hanging around town lately but nobody could get close to it.So Withers made the drive, bringing Moose Edward, his a 55-pound lab shepherd mix.
Withers spotted Nugget Thursday lying motionless under a parked truck. The dog wouldn't budge and instead watched Withers and Moose play in the snow for 25 minutes before emerging.
Except for a few briars and an extra-shaggy coat, Nugget looked the same, Withers said. Local residents had left everything from hot dogs to cooked venison to help the dog keep its weight up.
A happy ending between owner and his beloved pet :)
I'll never forget the time my dog escaped my yard during a thunderstorm...on a weekend I was out of town.
Turns out, she was "on the road" for the whole time, when some local university students found her. I rescued her at the pound the morning I got back.
Crying like a little girl? Indeed! This time, in gratitude!
I'd have walked the 1000 miles to recover one of mine.
Not even really sure how he gets out of the fence because we've never seen him do it. Last time he ended up 4 miles away down a pretty busy road! Luckily he had his tags and phone number on. So now we have to leave him inside whenever we go ~anywhere~.
I'm still trying to find an old ladies poodle who ran off when a burglar left her back door open two days ago. It's sort of a side project now but anything is possible I guess. I felt really bad for her since it was her only companion. The loss from the house didn't even matter to her
Oh dear... sounds heartbreaking... I hope the poodle is found!
She was practically in shock over the dog running off. It was pretty devastating. Two passes through her block a day is all I can do but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. I suspect someone may have grabbed the dog for their own
Such a nice story, and what nice people to leave food for Nugget for 8 months.
Usually people who pick up strays are interested in the safety of the dog, and most makie some cursory effort to find out if there's an owner looking. Make sure an ad's been placed in the local paper!
And make sure notices are posted around the area at stores and on telephone poles.
Her neighbor was doing that for her which I thought was pretty cool
