George Clooney: I Am a Liberal. There, I Said It!
Huffington Post ^ | Mon Mar 13, 2006 | George Clooney

I am a liberal. And I make no apologies for it. Hell, I'm proud of it.

Too many people run away from the label. They whisper it like you'd whisper "I'm a Nazi." Like it's dirty word. But turn away from saying "I'm a liberal" and it's like you're turning away from saying that blacks should be allowed to sit in the front of the bus, that women should be able to vote and get paid the same as a man, that McCarthy was wrong, that Vietnam was a mistake. And that Saddam Hussein had no ties to al-Qaeda and had nothing to do with 9/11.

This is an incredibly polarized time (wonder how that happened?). But I find that, more and more, people are trying to find things we can agree on. And, for me, one of the things we absolutely need to agree on is the idea that we're all allowed to question authority. We have to agree that it's not unpatriotic to hold our leaders accountable and to speak out.

That's one of the things that drew me to making a film about Murrow. When you hear Murrow say, "We mustn't confuse dissent with disloyalty" and "We can't defend freedom at home by deserting it at home," it's like he's commenting on today's headlines.

The fear of been criticized can be paralyzing. Just look at the way so many Democrats caved in the run up to the war. In 2003, a lot of us were saying, where is the link between Saddam and bin Laden? What does Iraq have to do with 9/11? We knew it was bullshit. Which is why it drives me crazy to hear all these Democrats saying, "We were misled." It makes me want to shout, "Fuck you, you weren't misled. You were afraid of being called unpatriotic."

Bottom line: it's not merely our right to question our government, it's our duty. Whatever the consequences. We can't demand freedom of speech then turn around and say, But please don't say bad things about us. You gotta be a grown up and take your hits.

I am a liberal. Fire away.

He means leftist, not liberal. The only thing liberal thing he believes in is the liberal use of government control.

Clooney... you moron.

Trying to compare McCartheyism with what is going on today is ludicrous.

Nobody is running around labeling Americans as "terrorists" like they are some boogeyman that can be lurking anywhere. Nobody is accusing Americans of being "terrorists" just for questioning the government.

On September 12, 2001, this nation sounded with a resounding unified voice that we will, once and for all, defeat Islamic terrorism. The enemy was well-defined. Those who commit acts of terror, and those who aid and support them, are the enemies of the United States.

What was Saddam's connection to 9/11? While no direct link between Iraq and 9/11 has been established beyond a reasonable doubt, you'd have to be a complete moron to deny the fact that Saddam DID support terrorism.

So when we call you out, Mr. Clooney, it's not for being a "liberal" or for "speaking out." We're calling you out for being the imbecile that you are- for completely being in denial over what is so obvious to the rest of us who don't live in mansions set back behind 15 foot concrete walls, shut off from the world. Saddam supported terrorism. He was our enemy. And we had to take him out before he took any actions against this country.

Well, you may be a liberal, Mr. Clooney, but your distinguishing characteristic is that you're a freaking idiot.

Re: Hollywood -

It's hard to believe that this is the same industry that turned out a steady stream of patriotic feature films, stirring newsreels, and traveling USO shows during WWII in order to assist the war effort and keep morale high at home. Of course, back then, Hollywood's leading men actually served their country, rather than siding with its enemies. Openly deriding their own military and its Commander-in-Chief would have been as unthinkable for Hollywood stars of the 1940's as it is commonplace for those of today. Tyrone Power, Jimmy Stewart, Charles Bronson, Eddie Albert, Clark Gable and others put their lives on the line in order to serve the greater cause of Freedom. Today's "stars" would rather be seen cavorting with Communist dictators like Fidel Castro or Castro-wannabes like Hugo Chavez than in the company of anyone wearing the uniform of the US Army.

Whereas many Hollywood film stars of the 1930's, '40's and '50's came from modest backgrounds, and were hard-working, self-sacrificing, and patriotic - today's entertainers seem almost uniformly spoiled, self-absorbed, ill-mannered, and poorly-educated. The contrast is striking for anyone who recalls how America once was so much poorer in material wealth, but so much richer in spirit, and where our screen heroes reflected our deepest values rather than our basest impulses.

hollywood during WW-II wasn't overrun by communnists as ti later was. what we are seeing is the intellecual afterborth of those who tried to infiltrate our system with evil intent.

Ever since the McCarthy era, hollywood has seen itself as better than ever, and patriotism as evil.

left=liberal=socialist=communist

I don't know about that. A lot of 1930s American films are as leftist as you can get.

left in 1930 isn't left of 2006. liberalism in the 30's hadn't been hijacked by the socialist radical chic.

I think the 1930s was a high point for Communists in the American Arts. Group Theater and all that. The Depression seduced a lot of intellectuals into Marxism. One film after another about the callow rich and down trodden poor.

I suppose George would consider it rude to actually show him the 1999 ABC story linking Saddam and Osama:
