Anyone Interested in a FReeper Weight Loss and Exercise Thread? (Vanity)

A few of us were thinking of starting an on-going FReeper diet and fitness thread. It would be a place where we could discuss weight loss, diet, exercise, getting back in shape, encourage each other in our efforts to get healthy, and celebrate our successes.

Any fitness or activity level. 100+ pounds to lose or no weight to lose. Those who have lost weight and kept it off, please share with us what has worked for you. Maybe you love a certain activity, biking, skiing, rock climbing, walking, running, whatever, tell us about how it helps you stay in shape. Share your weight loss success. Just a place to exchange ideas about all things exercise and diet related.

Don't be shy! As Freepers we spend a whole bunch of time in front of our computers and more then a few of us could do with some exercise and probably a little weight loss.

NO VERBAL ATTACKS! NO NAME CALLING! NO BASHING! THE OVERWEIGHT! NO NASTY PICTURES POSTED! This will be a thread about getting healthy and no attacks will be tolerated.

I love the idea. I need to lose weight and I'm getting depressed. I have fibromyalgia so sometimes its difficult to get moving. I walk every day for 20 minutes but I like candy too much. I need encouragement.

Sugar cravings suggest nutritional deficiency. Be sure you are getting all your body needs. There re lots of good sources. Try Dr. Perricone.

just caught this thread...

My rules: On carbs, nothing white.

we eat brown rice, sweet potatoes, brown bread.
I have given in to white spagetti noodles after hubby refused to eat the wheat spagetti.

I usually stick to about 1200 cals. Recently I've begun a regiment of eating about 300 cals every three hours.

And to tone up some flab, think protein protein protein

I know what I need to do, I just have to get up off my big fanny and DO IT!

Consider this philosophy. No one ever departs from their desires.

You will not get anywhere until or unless your desire to be slimmer is greater than your desire to enjoy the extra food.

My cholesterol DOUBLED on Atkins (I was losing 3 lbs per week, so I let myself go overboard on fats).

Wow! I feel privileged!

My doc had put me on cholesterol meds and they gave me cramps. He put me on a different one which I didn't take. Eight weeks later I went back for a follow-up and he went on and on about how much the 2d cholesterol med was helping me.

I finally had to fess up and tell him the truth!

My hardest day without carbs is Friday because of no meat on Friday for Catholics

What I do is get frozen crab legs from the grocery store. You can steam them or nuke them and eating crab is sort of celebratory so its a nice end-of-week treat.

Crab legs aren't cheap, however, but if it keeps me on the diet...

I actually am a diabetic so I'm on a very low carb - no sugar diet. I walk 8 miles a day which helps also. I have lost 25 pounds on it so far.

8 miles! Awesome. My brother was just diagnosed with diabetes and he is a pretty big fella'. Anything I can learn on this thread that would help him, I would be very happy to know so I could pass it by him and cross my fingers that he'll give it a try.

We do not have a history of diabetics in our family (that we know of) so the weight my brother carries is probably a key cause for the diabetes but he is just not motivated yet to do anything other than take medication for it.

A fat caliper and a tape measure are good ways of measuring progress.

Every time you lose a pound, God kills a liberal.

LOL...How about "every time you lose a pound, a liberal gains one?!"

From what I've read, muscle is basically good for you, and as you get older, your body loses muscle, so you need to do resistance or weight work to maintain it. Muscle is good for sugar and fat metabolism. My problem is that weight training ALWAYS leads to joint problems, so I have to back off. My body seems to resist muscle formation - kind of a Johnny Carson physique.

Try body-weight exercises to avoid and repair injury. Matt Furey's are excellent ("Combat Conditioning" is the book you want.)

I'm interested - add me!

I'm not overweight, but I'd still like to lose 15 pounds. You know how female vanity is.

seems like you are do too much too soon. I would just do one thing and than another etc

Problem is, if I quit smoking first, I'll gain even more weight.

Quitting smoking later isn't an option. For some reason Dana Reeve's death was a wakeup call for me, probably because we're the same age. I want to take advantage of that effect it's had on me.

I've decided that if I'm going to go off, I'll go off the diet before I'll go off the smoking wagon.

That's what I keep telling myself anyway...

You know, people harp on those who "only" have 10, 15, 20 pounds to lose, but God bless you for doing something about it, before it becomes 30, 40, 50, or 100 on up.
