Sopranos-The New Season Begins on Sunday Night--Official Thread
HBO ^ | 3/10/06 | Misterrob

Posted on 03/10/2006 10:52:47 AM PST by misterrob

I didn't see one had been started for the show so I thought I'd create one.

Last season left us with Tony having to exercise some leadership within his own organization in order to save them from a war with the larger and more powerful NY families. His nemesis is picked up during a sweep leaving a void in the mob heirarchy. Meanwhile Tony and his wife have reconciled (badly done mind you), Meadow is now engaged to her confused, brow beaten and somewhat afraid boyfriend. Initial reviews point to a good season with new cast members Ben Kingsley, Tim Daley and Juliana Margulies joining the show.

Chase says no on that one.

No I don't know whether Furio is coming back...his agent probably does though.

I enjoyed his character...sensitive brutal killer that he was....

I think killing Tony off would be a mistake, as he does drive the dynamics of the show..., but

I did see one reviewer suggest that he could linger in a coma or even die and still narate as in a Shakesperean choir.

Either way, Junior is toast, whacked or shipped to an old age home a la Livia.

I understand they are resolving, but what are they gonna do?

A whack a week, the little guy could have taken the 2 Mil and just split with his family and that could have been a worry that he went into the witness prgram or got whacked by Philly Leotardo and the NY family.

Junior is gone, one way or another dead or old age home and what the hell is he doing with a rod being under house arrest and Alzheimering like he is?

All in all, I'll be happy if the kid AJ gets it and Meadow goes topless!

See you nest week.

Janice tried to tell Ton, Uncle Jr. needed to go to assisted living....that's all I'm going to say tonight..:)

In light of what occurred, that seems like an excellent observation, but upon further consideration........

isn't that exactly Tony's and Janice's relationship all along?

I mean she bolted out to Cali and left Tony to carry water for the family and she only came back when Livia was "housed" and she immediately made herself at home in Liv's house.

In this instance she probably only wanted to institutionalize Junior to free up Bobby Bacala to move up in the organization.

They name streets after Janice...........

one way......... her way!

Actually, what caused the guy to hang himself was that both the Mob and the Feds were unwilling to let him go to Florida. Failure to comply would have meant going to jail.

When told to let go of his dream by the Feds he lost it.

One interesting theory is that this was in fact the last episode and remaining shows will go back and fill in what happened since the previous series - there seems to be about a year's worth of action missing, and a lot seems to have happened - daughter points out that for probably the first time there were no previews of what was going to happen next week - the program continues to fascinate......

Did you ever see the episode when Dr. Melfi is assaulted in the parking garage?

That was one of their best ever.

Not sure if anyone is out there tonight.

For him it is a dream sequence.

I saw it. I have HBO East and West. I suspect they're going to kill off Tony Soprano in 2 weeks.

Hitchcock blew people away when he killed off Janet Leigh, the main character in "Psycho", early in the film. It left people disoriented, which is exactly what Hitchcock wanted. Killing off Tony would have the same effect.

I knew Gandolfini wanted out of the series, and this is a brilliant way to let him go.

Tonight's episode sucked. Looks to be next week as things start to get hot. I still think that it is too early to take Gandolfini's character out of the series as what does the second half of the season look like? He is the central character. Would you tune in to watch AJ, Carmella or Pauly Walnuts' characters do their thing?

With AJ flunking out of school, he is now set up for a try at "the life." Especially now that he's sworn to whack Junior. Imagine if Chris takes AJ under his wing.

Possibly, at any rate, it looks like even if Tony survives he won't be his old self. Mental retardation, amnesia, advanced alzheimer's (as implied by the dream sequence), something like that, which would turn the show on its head, maybe moreso than if he dies. It could also meet Gandolfini's wish to basically play a different character the rest of the season, ala "Kevin Fennerty".

Interesting idea. Lost in his head, Tony lives an alternate life while his brain turns to mush in the hospital. Gandolfini plays a different role while Tony's mob family looks for new leadership.

Gutsy move on Chase's part.

The worst?!? I can understand that for many people, the draw of the show is Tony and only Tony, but for me the writing can carry one final season sans Tony, as we see the collapse of his empire after his death and the effects it would have on the stillborn man AJ, the hypocrite Carmella, the addict Christopher, the honor driven old school Johnny Sac. Who dies, but someone else's hand or his own? Who goes to jail? Who lives out their lives miserable and depressed? The dangling sword of dark (but earned and self imposed) tragedy hanging over the heads of this entire family has little appeal beyond whether Tony lives in the last 18 episodes?!? No, you people are all hooked, as are we all, like we're the poor sap with a fishing line sewn between our nipple rings.

And yeah, I can't stand AJ and Meadow, but at least they're given interesting subplots to finish the series. AJ vs. Jr, and the gay capo making a move on Meadow's fiance (as seen in the previews).

Tony is not the only draw of the show for me. I understand it's all very deep, etc. You are probably much smarter than me, I am not being sarcastic, I just hated the episode. Maybe I need to think about it. Carmella came off as phony to me, all the dramatics, etc. I'm sure many more interesting episodes to follow. Tonight was not one of them for me.
