Critics attack Academy for Brokeback snub

Leading US critics have questioned whether Hollywood is yet ready to give its biggest prize to a gay love story after the race drama Crash grabbed the Best Picture Oscar at the 78th Academy Awards last night.

Brokeback Mountain, the story of unfulfilled love between two gay cowboys that was nominated in eight categories, had been the runaway favourite for the award after cleaning up in the Golden Globes and Baftas.

But although it won three Oscars, including the Best Director award for the Taiwanese Ang Lee, the year's most talked-about film ended up losing on the final prize of the night.

"Perhaps the truth really is, Americans don’t want cowboys to be gay," said Larry McMurtry, the veteran Western writer who shared the award for best adapted screenplay.

Narnia was only 5 times the gross of Brokeback. My mistake....

Americans don't vote for best picture. Maybe you can look to members of the Academy as the Homophobes.

Excellent point, Mike. And Larry, after enjoying your previous writing, I'm looking at you in a whole new way after this, man. Just how high ARE the heels on your cowboy boots?

Why wasn't "Walk the Line" on the list for best films then?

What? A movie about two heterosexuals who fall in love and remain in love with one another through the years, good times and bad. Why would anyone want to pander to that particular demographic? They might actually make some money, and as "Saint" George Clooney told us last night, Hollywood WANTS to be out of the mainstream.(/sarcasm off)

Hubby and I watched Walk The Line on Saturday and both of us really liked that film. Good movie.

I noticed in a split second one frame from the cartoon showed some device and above it was a sign that read "Blow Suck".

If they were showing part of the film, there IS a device in it which has the two directions, one is Blow and one is Suck. It's a VACUUM for removing rabbits from their warrens below ground.

Don't presume, if you know nothing about the film at all. As far as the two men 'swishing' up onto the stage, I have no idea because I didn't see it, but I presume one of them was Nick Park. I have no idea what his sexual orientation is, but he does have that British effeminate way of speaking, as MANY British men have, many of whom, I'm sure, are as straight as an arrow. As for the bow ties, I've known many men who wear them, and none, that I know of, is homosexual. Again, it's simply an regular article of clothing, so one shouldn't presume another's sexual orientation based on what that person is wearing.

Now if they'd arrived on stage in sparkling capes and boas, I might just have to presume based on previous knowledge of men who wear such outfits. ;o)

Yeah, well I've never seen Same Time Next Year because I wasn't interested in seeing a movie in which two people continue to betray their spouses by committing adultery with each other over the years.

Excellent point,

Typical of most stories with a homosexual theme it was a story about lies and human misery. That type of story does not get butts into the seats.

I wasn't out to correct you, sorry. Your point was made excellently and I was just trying to show exactly how wide the gap was between the losers and winners. If Oscars were given out by how good the movie was, assuming good means drawing the biggest crowd, then Narnia should have taken the win. But politics and "feelings" seem to dictate the awards, (ref. Gibson's 'Passion'). Since the award is given on the basis of subjectivity, and not on objectivity, the awards are useless and meaningless to those who got them. This is why many who recieve such awards still continue to drown thier sorrows in drugs and alcohol. The life style is so empty. Meaningless. Just like the award. When they are alone, and it's just thier conscience present, they know that everything they do and stand for, is just a facade, one more scene in the game of life, waiting for the director of life to yell-Cut!, That's a take! But that day will only come at the time of death. For many, that day can't come soon enough.

Brokeback Mountain was an attempt to show the moral validity of homosexual love by wrapping it in the moral mantle of adultery. I'm not surprised straights didn't ever watch it. I'm surprised homosexuals are claiming it as one of their films.

Shalom.

I'd have paid cash money to see John Wayne's zombie stride across the satge and beat those jerks senseless.

Actually, he would have had a stick in his hand and said, "You boys want something in your a$$?"

Shalom.

I got the weird feeling that they were planning on giving most of the awards to BM but backed out.

I had the same feeling. Courageous little nimrods, ain't they?

The Academy is notoriously timid and shallow.

Next year's winner will be the story of two, gay, handicapped, Muslim, animal-rights-activist, cowboys and their search to have their insurance company pay for a gender change operation. The movie ends in tragedy when one of the cowboys is shot by Vice President Cheney who mistakes the feather boa of one of heroes for an ostrich.

ha ha ha nice one. i heard that billary appears in a guest role and she is kidnapped by a gay alien in a bunny suit

I'd say you have a Hollyweird winner on your hands with a few minor revisions.

Next year's winner will be the story of two, gay, handicapped, Muslim, animal-rights-activist, cowboys Marines and their search to have their insurance company the Federal Government pay for a gender change operation. The movie ends in tragedy when one of the cowboys Marines is shot by Vice President Cheney who mistakes the feather boa of one of heroes for an ostrich a California Condor or Spotted Owl.
