(CBS) GARY, Ind. A Northwest Indiana mother says her 14-year-old son has been beaten up three times in the past few weeks at school.
He had to leave a school in Portage that is mostly white. He currently goes to a predominantly African American school in Gary.
CBS 2 Northwest Indiana Bureau Chief Pamela Jones reports his mother says the boys race is the reason for the beatings.
"They kept screaming, How do you like that, whitey? Or 'F' you, whitey, said seventh grader James Tokarski. And they kept on calling me trailer trash, hillbilly, redneck."
Fourteen-year-old James Tokarski sports a black eye from the last time he says he was attacked at his new school, Bailly Middle School in Gary, Ind.
Tokarski started attended the predominantly black school three weeks ago and says students have targeted him once a week ever since.
The seventh grader said most of his friends are black, and the recent violence make him feel bad.
I mean, Im scared to death, he said.
"It's killing me. It's a shame. He's a good student. He's an honor roll student, said his mom, Barbara. He doesn't deserve to be treated like this just because he's white. He's got just as much right to an education as these kids do. And all they're doing is educating him that he doesn't want to be around blacks.
Tokarskis mom has police reports on two of the incidents. Hospital paperwork shows he was treated for blunt head trauma and facial bruising in the last case.
Gary Community Schools administrators say the suspects are facing consequences.
The students have been suspended and will face Title XX, said spokesperson Charmella Greer.
The victim's mother still feels she's gotten little response from Gary Community Schools. She's pressing charges against the suspects, and Gary police are investigating.
Meanwhile, the victim says he's grateful to at least seven African American female students who helped rescue him during one of the attacks.
CBS 2 news partner The Post-Tribune has talked to the mother of one of the students involved. She says that her son was not suspended and was in school Monday.
it's only racism if its white on black crime.
when it's black on white crime it's called * Cum-upins*...
get your facts straight.
No, it can't be a hate crime, the perps are black - don't you know anything about race relations in this country today? Whitey = bad, Blacks = do no wrong.
It's what they learn at home. Racism is two way street.
The hypocrisy is mind-boggling, though. Just like the white woman who was viciously beaten by blacks in Wichita KS. Not a peep from the supposedly tolerant Left.
What do you expect in Gary. Gangz.
So whats Title XX? Canned cultural sensitivity training where its emphasized that whitey is bad?
Years ago Indiana did prosecute a hate crime of Black on white. It simply didn't get much press.
Nothing to see here folks.... please move on. Racism is a one-way street and someone tried to drive against the traffic. There will be no candlelight vigils or demonstrations for this young boy. There will be no media coverage and no publicity for his plight. Move along now folks...
It's not a hate crime if the perpetrators are black, gay, or Muslim.
(It isn't even a hate crime when a Muslim beats up and rapes a black, lesbian. In special cases such as that, it is a failure of society to make the offending Muslim feel at home in America or Europe.)
Muslim honor killings are a cultural tradition. Our strength is in our diversity. < /s >
I think it's safe to assume that starts out with "Title" is some form of socialism or political correctness.
Oh man, do I feel for this kid.
I was in the same situation at Harry Ells High School in Richmond, Calif back in the 70s. There was a white student body there, but my family was too poor and I was totally froze out of that group.
Walking home in the afternoon meant walking way outside of whole block areas because I did not want to be the only white face on those streets.
It didn't get any better until I joined the Navy at age 17 -- fully a year before I was technically eligible for graduation (I GEDed, but the high school sent me a diploma anyhow) just to get out of that mess.
I threw the diploma in the trash when I got it.
dog days...
And some people wonder why I like living in Japan.
Our neighbored tract fence has been constantly barraged with graffiti, from gangs of another culture, much of the writing in their native language, while in the neighborhoods were they live, there is none, the vandalism appears to be motivated by racial hatred. We have even had a Christian church in our neighborhood window broken, graffiti and an arson attempt by gang members form the other culture, but because we are not a racially protected minority we cant even get the police often out here to investigate.
I have been a really big critic of the presidents open boarders and the lawlessness of illegal immigration. Part of it is the frustration of living in my community where we are becoming a minority, yet have no representation or laws that can protect against such hate crimes, and all we are getting from our politicians is they want to bring more and if we object we are somehow racist.
Recently I have heard setting a church on fire can now be a felony in some parts with up life sentences, and even heard of somebody going to jail for printing cartoons in their own publications that might be offensive to other cultures, but when our church is set on fire and the racial mockery is printed on our own property without our consent, where is the justice?

Title XX Program
City of Gary, Health and Human Services Social Services Title XX Program is an Indiana State Child Care Subsidy. The Bureau of Child Development and the Division of Family and Children under the Family and Social Services Administration administers Social Services Block Grant funds to provide developmentally appropriate quality child care for low income families. In recent years we have seen an increase in the need for child-care under the development of the Welfare to Work Program. This past year, due to the restructuring of the Lake County Voucher Program, we have experienced an influx of parents transferred from the former Step Ahead Program now service through Title XX. Currently we have a total of 24 child-care homes under the umbrella Health and Human Services, serving over 50 children.
Oh yeah...no racism in Japan....right gaijin?
;-)
Not the same kind,
Not as dangerous.
Black on white racism tends to get a but more physical.
And believe me, I know all you want to ever learn about that.
You have no idea what me and my friends went thru.
There were places where they just plain wanted to KILL US. Just because we were white. And they were not lying.
You walk through Parchester. Or South of 23rd street. Go ahead. I will even put flowers on your grave.
Thank GOD for the United States Navy. I am sure I would have been killed if I had not gotten out of Richmond California at that time. I wanted to go USMC, but the recruiter already had his quota.
