Hotties with brooms: U.S. women curlers have sex appeal
Mercury news ^ | Tom Powers

PINEROLO, Italy - One of the hottest tickets at the Sydney Summer Games in 2000 was track and field. Surprisingly, it wasn't because of the great sprinters or hurdlers that were performing, either.

A phenomenon occurred in the Land Down Under. It was dubbed "Babes Over Bars" by the local press. Well, maybe by the slightly less dignified media outlets. And it became the greatest show on earth.

As it turned out, an extraordinary collection of attractive women were competing in the pole vault. Several of them even posed for calendars and picture books. Suffice it to say, the women's pole vault never was more popular.

Say what you want about athletic ability being able to stand on its own merits, but sex appeal sells. And that applies to any gender and any sport.

I watched a lot of the men's team. Very entertaining. I was pleasantly surprised. I still don't get all the rules, but it was fun to watch.

So, why is there women's curling? Why can women not compete in curling with men? It's not like it's a contact sport. It's not like you have to be fast or strong.

It's almost like having separate men's and women's chess.

What, better than rhythmic gymnastics and synchronized swimming? (I know, I know. These athletes are artistic, athletic, and their "sports" are harder than I could ever imagine. . . but they still look silly to me.)

I loved that SNL spoof of men's synchronized swimming with Martin Short and Harry Shearer. Hilarious.

I've got to believe that this sport will become more popular ...

It's a legitimate winter sport no question ... easy for neophyte onlookers to understand and if the players happen to be attractive women, so much the better. My only complaint, I was introduced to curling as a teenager but haven't played in decades. Back in the good old days we used brooms not brushes as they do today. These brooms were shorter than your normal broom, configured differently, the bristle part was round and tightly bunched. It comprised about a third of the overall length of the broom. The broom was gripped in such a manner that when you swept, the broom contacting the ice made a loud thumping sound. The loud thumping sound, which could be heard for some distance, gave curling extra zest ... it was unique to curling. The brushes used today, perhaps more effective, are way to pedestrian.

The brushes take skill to manipulate too.
Its just an improvement to the game such as I'm sure you realize/recognize

As any technology is.

Yes, the brooms and their familiar sound are a fav of mine too

That's Alyssa Milano (yum!). She played Tony Danza's daughter "Samantha" on Who's the Boss.
