The first edition doesn't have USB support at all. 98SE does--though it's somewhat limited (and not a guarantee it will work).

Differentiating the two: 98 has a build number (on the System Information tab) of 4.10.1998 or 4.10.1998A

98SE has 4.10.2220A or 4.10.2220B

I'd say if possible, you may want to consider the upgrade to 2k or XP--assuming Linux isn't an option.

The caveats here are that XP's going to require a lot of juice which a POS running 98 may or may not have, and that trying to work a new device on old hardware is quite literally a crapshoot.

it is an ancient POS Compaq. I believe I wanted to load win2kPro on it 3 years ago, and discovered its system was not competent enough for it.

I'm running Win 98 SE, and I output through USB to my laser printer without difficulty.

And yeah, I need to upgrade too.

i hate that office.
something about it kills electronics.
it may be the workers (who *are* TDTO)
it may be something else.

You're carrying bad karma around in there. It's like having a carpet that promotes static electricity.

You need to have a better attitude, so you can reduce the problems, not add to them.

Give the people who work there a pleasant surprise, like fresh flowers or something.

Right now, you go into the environment like a pet goes into the vet's office. You don't like it, and it gets you down.

You have to turn it around, seize the day, or the moment. -- Carpe Crappy!

Even if you fake it, you'll feel better.

Unfortunately, I'm out of ideas--unless you want to try Linux.

Methinks the POS has met its end...

Hi/Bye y'all.

Been one of the lesser birthdays here (though after you've collected several dozen one more doesn't mean much until you can begin to collect on "senior rates"). I'm off to celebrate my impending/increasing increpitude...

(...if I can remember how I intended to...)

*\;-)

I run XP Home and Suse 10 on a dual-boot.

The USB's work fine, although I had to change printers to have one work in Linux.

It's interesting. I can get my FreeNX server, the NX Client and my BitTorrent client to work in Linux, but not in Windows.

Likewise, I can get eDonkey, iTunes 6, and Office 2003 to work in Windows, but not in Linux.

I guess it's just a tradeoff.

I don't believe in getting old.

There's no future in it.

Happy Birthday, Sionnsar. Would you like a left-handed birthday poem?

Okay ... "I am twenty eight years and three hundred ninety-seven months old."

Oh, yeah. I can see how much better that looks.

Thanks for the advice.
