One leather pair of oxfords and one pair of heavily-worn (and waterproofed) steel-toe boots.

They've lasted me a couple of years, and I might have to replace them--which takes about $75 and fifteen minutes.

Obviously, steel-toes cost more.

Nope, we're all out of Busch. I hear there's some old Natty Light in the public cooler down the hall.

Just sit down, pop a can and the Nice Men from Room 101 will be with you shortly.

I'd be pleased if they didn't breed, either.

Hell, if you can't count to six, you have no business having that many kids! *Fumes*

But a gal can never have too many shoes!

Ain't that the truth. I'm still trying to work out what shoes I'll wear on my wedding day...

(And of course, NONE of the shoes in my wardrobe are suitable! *Snort*)

That's pretty funny!

I finished The Dark Tower, and have started on "The Road To The Dark Tower."

I was immediately reminded of "The Neverending Story" as soon as you-know-who showed up in the series, and that was reinforced by the end of the book. All that time, all that work and for what?

It's the first time I've ever been really disappointed in something he's written. *sigh* But it was a good, long read, I have to say that.

(Maybe I'm up too early...?)

"Not suitable" is why we have to go buy more shoes! I have probably 30 pairs of shoes, a dozen sandals and probably 8-10 pairs of boots. I may have more than that...I haven't counted for a while. :o]

I forgot to add, my Papal Moniker was "Unspeakable Ralph I"... ROTFLMAO... how very apt, for a third-generation lapsed Catholic. ;-)

about choice=happiness: fine on paper, denied in practice. by my observation, most people prefer to have no significant choices to make. I don't know whether this is innate or trained, but it appears to be consistent.

about the state and power -

clearly, all real authority over anything derives from and is proportional to the power to deny, dilute, limit, damage, or destroy that thing.

the founders knew this.

This leads into a deeper discussion of the intrinsic validity (or lack thereof) of the concept of "rights" than I am able to pursue.

Good morning! You're up rather early (and since it's gone midnight here, technically it's "morning"... this insomnia is really giving me the willies...)

I daren't count the number of pairs of shoes I have. Although, I have rather hard-to-fit feet, and thus, shoe shopping isn't as "fun" as it might otherwise be. *Sigh*

And then there's all the pairs of shoes I left in storage in the U.S., the state of which (by now) is anyone's guess.

Anyway... gotta try and get some sleep - a friend is up in Brisbane from Melbourne, and is going to help me shop for my wedding dress (and probably matching shoes) later today...

LOL!
My insomnia is on the other end of yours. (At least, for this month...) I awaken early and can't go back to sleep, so I get up and here I am...

I know what hard-to-fit-feet means. I have a couple of my own. I was born with bunions, like my dad and one of my neices, so it was hard to fit my feet until I had surgery...now, though...;o]

Be sure to take a piccie of your dress (and shoes) so we can see them, OK? I'm soooo excited for you!!

XO

Oh, naturally you'll be subjected to pictures! (of my dress and shoes, that is. Not my insomnia. LOL)

Kewl!

That would be so fun! Of course, the most fun would actually be present when you get married, but having you visit will make up for a little of that. ;o]

((((Monkey Face))) hugs to ya, girlfriend!
If it makes you feel any better, there's a great many in our immediate families who'll miss the wedding... so much so, that we'll probably have to have some sort of vow renewal in the United States.

Get this... my brother just found out he's got an interview with Google, in California! (They're flying him across the Pacific, would you believe, for a day's worth of interviews.) So, he's not even sure if he'll be in the country for my wedding... he's gonna try, though. I wish him all the best with the U.S. thing, though - it's been his ambition for a while, so it'd be great for him!

Woo-Hoo!

Good luck to your brother!

It would be great to be able to be at your vow renewal in the US, or even a reception. We could do that...That's ALMOST as good as being there for the original vows. (Almost.)

I'm looking forward to having you here, "within reach!"
And meeting your Sweetie. I know he's a great guy!

Being an existentialist is not easy for many people. Fortunately that is only one of five or so basic ways to knowledge. Thomism has a large following.

the concept of "rights"

Some work has been done on rights; there would be several shelves of legal surveys on rights in most public libraries. Less, nearly none, on the state. Power and authority is not necessary to either, although in our modern world we have seen our simple state take on considerable power and authority.
