A comparison between two superficially unrelated things.

A simile states that A is like or as B; metaphors state that A is B or B substitutes for A.

Basically, similes generally use like or as; metaphors generally don't.

I can't think of a case in which they would. Metaphors can use 'of,' as in "the street of my mind," and so on; 'in' as in the case of "theatre in my mind." It's good to be careful and not confuse personification with metaphor--or at least don't assume them to be identicals.

The sapling dealt with the monkey swinging around it with the same calm detachment as a washing mashine delicately spin-cycling a bowling ball.

That's ... er ... an indication that I need to go to bed...I think I actually understood it.

I don't remember any offhand either, though this was in my English 101 notes...

I can't find a better examplle of powerful imagery, as well as expertise in metaphor, than here in Wilfred Owen ...

Anthem for Doomed Youth

What passing-bells for these who die as cattle?
-Only the monstrous anger of the guns.
Only the stuttering rifles' rapid rattle
Can patter out their hasty orisons.
No mockeries now for them; no prayers nor bells;
Nor any voice of mourning save the choirs,-
The shrill, demented choirs of wailing shells;
And bugles calling for them from sad shires.

What candles may be held to speed them all?
Not in the hands of boys but in their eyes
Shall shine the holy glimmers of good-byes.
The pallor of girls' brows shall be their pall;
Their flowers the tenderness of patient minds,
And each slow dusk a drawing-down of blinds.

Hi everyone. I made it back to my apartment safely. And my spring break ends in about 13 hours.

If I drank Darks' coffee, I'd be sidelined from a horrible migraine.

"If I drank Darks' coffee, I'd be sidelined from a horrible migraine."

And even worse conditions would prevail at the other end.

"Oh well, I made my appearance."

Your parents are going to be hurt that you treat visiting with them so cavalierly.
