If you buy a Dell, I recommend you do so through a business. That way, your tech support is not outsourced. I also suggest you get Gold level tech support --- less drama if you need to call in.
If you go the Mac route, make sure you buy Mac verisons of your software ... I do not recommend that you try running Windows apps on the Mac.
I would recommend certain features in a new PC, but I don't want to geek you out unnecessarily ... let me know if I should continue!
I've been incredibly happy with my Dell.
Sam, what I recommend is getting a new Dell that does what you want - with Windows XP on it - and get the extended care warranty with it. That comes standard now for I think the first two years and it might be worth going to three. If anything goes wrong with the computer hardware, even if it's your fault, they'll fix it.
We have that at work on a set of laptops. So far they have fixed a dropped, cracked laptop screen; sent new batteries; replaced a hard drive; and walked me through troubleshooting a bunch of other problems (there are twenty laptops I'm talking about the average is less than one problem in a year per laptop)
If you know exactly what you want the computer to do, I can make suggestions as far as specific setup. Oh, yes, and if you're going with a desktop get a good flat screen monitor, it'll make a huge difference.
They made a horrible mistake when they let you go, Rose, but their service has really improved lately. I had to call Dell Thursday and everyone I talked to was American. It made things much easier. I'm having power problems with my own Dell but when it's time for a new laptop I'll probably still go back to them.
Just...whatever you do, don't buy an eMachine. If there's one thing I've learned from my experience working at the computer repair shop, that's it. The components are substandard. We literally had fifteen eMachines come in with failed parts just in the short time I was there, mostly MAJOR things like motherboards.
I've had good experience with Dell. There are a lot of customer service complaints, but I think they're trying to address that - which says something for what kind of company they are.
I'm trying not to think about the fact that I really, really want a new system...
My laptop celebrates its forth birthday this week. Granted, a lot of people keep systems until they die, but...I want wayyyyyy more space and a better screen and...stuff like that.
Don't really need a whole lot more speed, but the other things are bothering me, especially with TV show cookies...
Set aside a certain amount from each paycheck, if you can. Check out Dell refurbished.
I want a new machine too - my laptop is two years old. But I'm going to hold off on a new laptop until I can get one with Vista. By then I should have a real job and can afford a computer.
I'm thinking maybe by fall...if I don't need that money to get to my brother's wedding. They haven't completely made up their minds on a date yet.
Did Cartman make it back to your place last night?
Yeah - he was back over here before we went to bed. He's in now...
What are ya doing over there? We're rumbling to a start slowly over here :~\
Just get Talon to buy you one. :)
I went out to the hardware store and the grocery. Pulled a 2J and bought a hugh box of frozen popcorn chicken. ;-) I figure it'll be good for a lot of quick dinners. Need to repackage it in smaller bags, though.
Cisco was a very good boy on the trip, and now is working away at his chew bone. I'm thinking I shoulda gotten one of the multipacks of nylon bones instead of just getting one. Wasn't sure if he'd like those or not, though. Those and the tennis balls are the biggest hits.
Heh. Burpee has a "do not propagate illegaly" on some seed packets. How are they gonna stop me saving seeds?
OK - well how about if we set a goal of maybe startin' in 30 minutes.
Werks for me.
