Advice on good .30-06 rifle? (Vanity)
Self ^ | 2-20-06 | Self

Posted on 02/20/2006 12:43:45 PM PST by TChris

I'm beginning to look at buying a rifle. Everything I've read so far indicates that the .30-06 is a good, all-around caliber/cartridge.

I saw a Remington model 710 with a Bushnell scope for sale at a store the other day. Any comments on that model?

Other advice?

What are you going to do with it?

What rifles do you have already?

Remington had a recall of the 710 a while back. Had something to do with the manual safety arm mechanism.

Get one with a composite stock, you'll be amazed how much lighter it will be compared to a wooden stock.

go to the Winchester web site - they got some purty ones

I shot a winchester 30.06 withan octogon barrel once - I putwas aming at a gallon jug (empty) about 80 yards away-

it didnt move...

Puzzled, I fired again... still nothing - so I went up there to look at the backboard to see if I had to adjust my sights...

and there were two holes 1 millimeter away from each other

The model 710 is a cheaper version of the model 700. One of the reasons it's cheaper is the barrel isn't threaded into the receiver.

Look at the Savage 30-06 with the accu trigger. Savage's are low cost, very accurate out of the box and the accu trigger allows you to adjust the trigger to your liking.

I had a similar experience shooting my father's .30-06 with accelerator bullets (.22 in a plastic sabot). I shot the jug full of water at about 100 yards, and nothing seemed to happen. I walked out to the target and found that the cap was missing, all the water was gone...and as I got close enough and looked at the back of the jug... the entire back face of the water jug was completely gone. Jagged plastic remained around the edges, but the back was just... gone. No sign of any water either. It was just...gone.

What are you going to do with it?

Deer, elk, moose hunting, eventually.

What rifles do you have already?

None. I own a Taurus PT-100 .40S&W. Want to get a .30-06 and probably a 20 ga. for trap and dove.

Thanks for all your recommendations. My employer blocks firearms sites, so I'll look at them when I get home.

Any good, scientific studies/testing to show which models are most accurate? Can any rifle be made extremely accurate by a good gunsmith, or are there inherent design differences which affect accuracy?
