Would you like your mother lampooned that way?
Yes. I would. If my mother somehow became a focus of magical, superstitious beliefs, then I would certainly want those beliefs satirized and thereby deflated. (I'm not talking about serious Catholic views here, even including Mariology. I'm talking about facile, "quick fix" views, for example that "faith healing" can be achieved by touching sacred objects, which is what the episode was in fact addressing.)
No, but I also won't go on a murderous rampage because of it.
I see the South Park episode not as bashing Mary per se, but rather those who see her in stupid circumstances (grilled cheese sandwich, anyone?). And of course it has to be offensive--it's South Park.
Lets look at it this way shall we? The very fact that you have statues of the Virgin Mary makes you even more of an enemy to islam. Remember the taliban blowing up the Hindu statues from the cliff wall in Afghanistan? If you fail to uphold the right of Free citizens to express their opinions regarding religion then you are enabling the muslimes as they repress and persecute Christianity around the world. I would prefer the Virgin Mary without a burkha if its all the same to you. You don't have to like or agree with episode but we must all stand together in opposition to censorship, lest we at some time be censored ourselves.
