A 28-year-old Dripping Springs High School chemistry teacher was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of initiating an intimate relationship with one of her students, according to court documents.
Rebecca Garrison of Austin is facing charges of indecency with a child and improper relationship between an educator and student. She is in the Hays County Jail.
Both charges are second-degree felonies, which are punishable by two to 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $10,000.
The student's mother told officials she became suspicious of her son's relationship with Garrison and started checking his e-mails and cell phone records, an affidavit says. When she found references to "sexual activity and declarations of love" between them, she told Greg Jung, the principal, about the relationship, the document says.
Jung could not be reached for comment.
According to the affidavit, the boy, whose name and age have not been released, sneaked out of his house early in January to meet with Garrison.
Garrison resigned from her position in January. She does not have a criminal record.
"Naturally, we're disappointed that this measure has to be taken, but our first and foremost obligation and desire is to protect students," said Mary Ward, superintendent for the Dripping Springs school district. Ward said Garrison was a "gifted, well-liked and highly respected" teacher.
Two other teachers in Central Texas have been cited for similar incidents in the past month. On Feb. 3, a substitute teacher in Manor was charged with having oral sex with one student and soliciting sex from another. In January, a Leander teacher turned himself in to police for improperly touching a student and making inappropriate comments to others.
Ward said two reasons for the frequency of teachers being charged in such cases are a recent urgency in people reporting sexual abuse and the increasing access that teachers have to students via e-mail and cell phones.

They didn't waste any time throwing her under the bus...she's no longer listed on the faculty website. |
Thank God it wasn't Mr Garrison - okay
Are they adding something to the water in High Schools these days? This is getting ridiculous.

I seen the picture on a later post. At least this one was a looker.(sarcasm) The national epidemic continues...
Let's all please refrain from harassing this woman at this point. She's still innocent until proven guilty. Kids lie.
With a school name like that, how could you NOT expect this..?
It probably would have been quite effective if Mom after discovering the emails had simply read her kid the riot act and grounded him until he enlisted in the Army, or had Dad do it instead (oh yeah, like there really is an actual father living at home!;) How about exercising some parental authority? Oh well, at least we got another "Desperate Housewife" off the streets!;)
