Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

The difference between men and women is never so obvious till my hubby and I walk into a store. I head for dishes, clothes and shoes. Choosing the right pair of shoes with matching accessories is an adrenalin rush for many women. He heads for automotive and (you're right) power tools. His eyes light up like a kid in a candy store.

The only department we shop together in is the firearms area. It is there that our interest converge. Lol

"Ah.... why does making things simpler, complicate things?"

ROTFLOL

When I bought my 1st computer back in 1980 (IBM PC 8086, two 5.25" floppy drives, no hard drive, 64k ram, CRT, Epson FX80), the salesman told me it would make my life so much better - easier to get work done & in half the time, more time for the wife & kids, more time for fishing, no more typos, no more filing, no more paperwork - the computer age was here.   Yeaaahhh - right!  LOL

"Proof that Fry's is the devil...$159. What you say? $159 for a ECS K9T890A, Athlon 64 3200+. And 1 GB of Corsair PC3200 dual channel RAM (2x512 MB) for $49.99"

Now that's just cruel, heheh.

Not to start talking to myself, but I sure would love to see a SPARC version of the folding client. I've got a few really powerful machines at my lab at work that would be excellent clients for this.

OK, that was depressing, and I don't quite understand it. I guess we're the unofficial Freepers folding for Roni.

I didn't want to read the entire thread, so I may have missed something important. But in any case we are doing what we believe in, and if our favorite web site doesn't endorse us, well it doesn't really matter. The Folding thread is still here. We are hopefully doing some good on the scientific front and as our team gains ground, we are also bringing some publicity to our favorite web site.

...can you tell us where most of your CPUs come from? ...

Seven of the CPUs are home machines, all the others are at work where I use only those that would go unnoticed in case of a crash. My boss (MIS Director) tolerates me but if something fails and there's a whiff of folding near it he would have me pull it out of all of them. I've been using this approach since mid-2003.

I guess I still don't understand their reluctance to be involved in this.

Me either, but after the last episode, silence is golden.

Remember what I told them last Sunday? They had 1 week to get their act together. One week. Well, guess what. They better get used to 'mountain climbing'.

Can y'all imagine what this team would look like if it were 'sanctioned'?

Yes, it all makes since now. If we were officially sanctioned then we would now be so far ahead of the DUguys that they wouldn't even bother to try to catch up. But by not officially sanctioning us, FR has enabled more CPUs to be dedicated to folding than would other wise be possible. Competition, thats the key.

It's all good!

That's great. With your help, and the help of the 200 other members, we're heading for the #3 spot (as Klutz like to say :)
