Welcome to the new FreeRepublic folding@home thread. The previous thread has gotten too large, so we move on to yet another.

While this folding@home team is not officially sanctioned by Free Republic, it's 250+ members comprised primarily of Free Republic members in good standing have banded together to donate their excess CPU cycles to a worthy cause. Via distributed computing, millions of computers around the world, contribute directly to scientific research, in the quest for a greater understanding of diseases such as Alzheimer's, Cancer, and Mad Cow (BSE).

Currently, the team is in 241st place, having moved up from 1200th place, a week earlier, and is now in the top 100 teams, for daily contributions.

This is an entirely voluntary program, and if you want to learn more, please see the links posted below (or read one of the previous 8 folding threads)

I'm going to add in some more this coming week.

Best do something ASAP or Fortyfied (lrenh) will have you pwned. He is plowing thru the charts like Bill Clinton at a Playboy convention.

Million a month seems like a worthy goal.

Don't blink, but we're already there. Not counting today, in the last 28 days, we've posted 1088905 points. Growth rate continues, so 1.5, 2 million, is not unreasonable. Eventually, I guess we'll level out, but not for a couple of months or two, which should put us well into the top 100.

Out folding the geek companies that do business with China pleases me to no end.

Microsoft? Bite it.

I really think we should have the moderators change the thread title to note that we passed Microsoft.

ACK!

Let's not ask them to do anything.

I guess I still don't understand their reluctance to be involved in this.

Thanks for your original ping on this. It's a worthy cause and I'm proud to be part of our progress! Besides, my PC at work was getting bored looking for ET with SETI@Home for over 5 years. :-)

We could always provide service by gently lifting and separating.

I really don't want to dig up the past, if you're curious view the folding threads circa January 2. Let's leave Jim and the mods out. We can exist here, do our thing and be left alone.
Seems to be a mutual agreement.

You got that right, after the last *fiasco*.

Anyway, notice that we've moved up 9 places in 24 hrs, the Dummies have only moved up 11, and they're like, way back in the pack?

Awful quiet over on their site. Usually, about every 2 hrs, someone posts a "cheerleading" message, but I think that this weekend, has about done them in. Everytime they think they reach a milestone, we just blow right by it.

I'm a mean evil person. I timed my "new acquisitions, just right, so about the time, they reached their "300CPU" milestone, guess what.

Don't blink, but we're already there.

Yup. A glance back at the history reveals we hit that mark on February 8th.

I guess I still don't understand their reluctance to be involved in this.

Nobody else does either, but it's one of those questions, better left unasked, and unanswered.

Like Malsua says, we're doing just great, with a once a week thread, and it seems to be a happy medium between the two schools of thought

Yeah, that was almost a bloodbath. We lost a few good folders over that and nearly lost you, as I remember...

And welcome aboard. While finding ET might be a worthwhile cause, folding proteins is more "down to earth", and the fact that we have a competing team, makes it a lot more fun.

"Down to earth" is right. I figure if SETI hasn't found anything worthwhile after all this time we can be doing something more exciting for everyone here at "home".

Yup... ugly night. Thank god, we all took a step back, a couple of deep breaths, and a chill pill.

Can't say enough about a few, like Rebel_tex, Texas_booster, Ken_in_Texas, and others, who kept things cooled down, even as the tempers were flaring.

*lol*, let's not even THINK about going anywhere near that point again.
