Nano fans sore over scratches

New lawsuit asks Apple to replace all affected iPod units

Matthew Yi, Chronicle Staff Writer

Saturday, February 11, 2006

Apple Computer Inc. is facing yet another lawsuit that alleges that the colorful screen on the popular iPod Nano music player is prone to scratches that make the display unreadable.

"This is marketed as a beautiful, sleek device, which it is, but that feature is completely gone after a few weeks of using it," said Harvey Rosenfield, an attorney who filed the latest complaint late Thursday in San Mateo County Superior Court.

"If (Apple chief executive) Steve Jobs can pull it out of his pocket, we should be able to pull it out of our pockets without it being ruined," he said.

The suit, which is seeking class-action status, wants Apple to recall and replace all affected iPod Nanos.

"any suggestions would be great."

Okay. If you are going to pay bucks for something, then take care of it. It is a electronic item; if you drop it, it will break. It you put it in your pocket with coins and keys, expect it to get damaged.

**Note that in the commercials, it is to be carried in your hand at all times.

If Mommy & Daddy gave you the money to buy it then never mind, they have their own problems they created.

"I meant any suggestions on the type of iPod"

Then what was the point of your post #4 in a thread about dumb asses not taking care of their toys and suing the manufacture?

I protect my 4th generation 40 GB iPod with something like this:

It's been *great* so far.

Don't know what your listening/viewing needs are, but 40 GB and a B&W screen have worked fine for me. I don't need video capabilities and still have about 9 GB free space for music.

I recommend buying the Agent18-brand case. It's thick plastic, semi-frosted for a nice visual effect, and has a cutout area for the dock, headphones, and click wheel. Apple sells them at their online store (or possibly at a physical Apple Store--I don't have one around, so I can't check.)

I'm buying a Nano soon, and plan to get the Agent18 case, plus the Invisible Shield. For the amount of money these things cost, a few more bucks invested in long-term protection is not a big deal.

SanDisk has some excellent models coming out in mid-March (they actually have some good models now, but I'm waiting until mid-March for their latest models) that they showed at the last Consumer Electronics show. The link below (you'll have to cut and paste -- I don't know how to copy a link) will give a synopsis of some of the MP3 players (from a variety of makers) shown at CES:

I recently bought a 5th generation 60G video iPod and there's virtually *nothing* out here locally, as far as really good protective cases goes.

I had the thing for 2 weeks by the time I finally located a "kickstand" leather case by Belkin.
At that point, the sleek black face was already getting scuffy even though I took extreme precautions with it and didn't even take it out of the house.

I put the kickstand case on and then had to remove it the other day to get a dog whisker out of it.

Something inside the "protective case" raked a scratch down the length of the iPod that nearly made me cry.

Maybe the stitching or a rough spot where the clear window joins the leather, I don't know....

But, the things are nearly impossible to keep scratch free.

The 4th generation 60G I had before this one was a lot bulkier but also a lot sturdier, both in finish and construction.

Now I wish I'd kept that one instead.

Oh, I forgot to mention that mine's *black* which makes the scratches show up really bad.

I agree, I dont have a problem spending the few extra bucks for protection.
Thanks for your suggestions. :o)

Yeah, the new iPods seem to take damage more easily than the older ones, but I'd also put the blame on Belkin--they suck, period.

Invisible Shield comboed with the Agent18 case should be damn near perfect.

I wish I'd known about the Agent 18 earlier.
The Invisible Shield thing was a mess to apply.
I must have a bazillion air bubbles under there....:))

Our local Circuit City has every accessory known to mankind for the Nanos and Shuffles and diddly-squat for anything else.

[not that I'd ever want to buy a day-glo green tube sock for my iPod anyway]....;D

*grin*

What won't they sue over. I guess they've never used a "suggestions" box.

Then what was the point of your post #4 in a thread about dumb asses not taking care of their toys and suing the manufacture?

"I was going to buy my first iPod this week."
(He had decided to make an initial iPod purchase within 7 days)
"Guess I'll have to choose another."
(He changed his mind based on the posted article, thinking the iPod to be of less value than advertised)
"Any suggestions would be great."
(He is looking for suggestions for a quality alternative to an iPod)

That seems very clear to me.

Are your reading comprehension skills waning or did someone pee in your Wheaties this morning?
