Last 100 years warmest since 9th century, say British researchers

Researchers at the University of East Anglia (UEA) in eastern Britain, measured changes in fossil shells, tree rings, ice cores and other past temperature records or 'proxies' to reach their findings, which were published in the journal Science Friday. They also looked at people's diaries from the last 750 years... The analysis confirmed periods of significant warmth in the northern hemisphere from about 890 to 1170 AD - the so-called Medieval Warm Period - and for much colder periods from about 1580 - 1850, known as the Little Ice Age.

In other words, climate change and climate cycles are natural. My comment at the source website:
The medieval warming period was warmer than now, based on the fact that remains of farmsteads of that time are found at latitudes and altitudes where farming is no longer possible (or _still_ no longer possible, for the very stupid, who have very poor comprehension). Climate change was natural then, just as it is natural now, and nothing we do has anything to do with it. Claiming that CO2 or some other magic bean gas has been making it warm, only to be shown that there's a natural climate cycle, doesn't make the fallback position, that gases make it worse. But idiots will persist in making those types of claims.

They were driving SUV's too much in the ninth century, as well. This proves it. There is no scientific disagreement on this subject, so just shut up and give the UN your money now.

Doesn't it seem like this kind of story comes out EVERY week? "(Event related to 'Global Warming) Worst In XXXX Years"?

That is one of the best distillations of WWF/Sierra Club/Greenpeace/DNC talking points that I have ever seen.

Warmest since the 9th century. IOW this has happened before and without the use of the internal combustion engine.

fascinating.

Next you will be saying that the Martian ice caps melting away is not caused by human produced CO2. (Heh.) Or that Mann's Ski Jump was an artifact of improper use of mathematics or even (gasp!) fraud!! Oh, the horror!!

Ooooh, that was mean. Shame on you for implying that the Earth, the Solar System, the entire universe doesn't revolve around humans and what they do. ;)

Last 100 years warmest since 9th century

Now how is that supposed to be known?

If I remember history correctly it was 1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue.

This winter it has been obviously warmer than normal in the northeast but has been very cold in Russia.
Since they did`nt even know the existence of the "new world" how did they get a global temperature basis?

In school I never read about the 8th-9th century industrial revolution that caused that Global Warming back then The greenies must have got it under control.I guess that's why the standard of living was so low in the Medieval period.

If you would take a moment to read just the 1st paragraph of the article you're replying to, you would know that they're talking about eastern Britain and they do give an explanation of how they make their observations. All that without even having to click to the actual article!

They also looked at people's diaries from the last 750 years...

Cute.

Perhaps I read it wrong but to me it identifies the location of the research facility but than goes on to talk about the entire northern hemisphere .

It absolutely drives me nuts when these psuedo-eggsheads attempt to define a static value to a dymanic system. The only thing being measured is noise in data. The psuedo-eggsheads consistantly disregard trillions of data points and look at only the last few to calculate a trend. If I tried this at work I would be fired on the spot. They are on a mission of fools.

That debunks global warming by humans for sure.

i was taking a human geography course at the uofMinn last year. one of the subjects that the prof was high on was global warming. he gave a great lecture on how the 20th century was the warmest in 1100 years, it was very well graphed with great statistics that ended right at the 9th century. i asked him in lecture about why the stats ended at an odd year, after reading about this same thing earlier, he said that it didnt matter what had happened before, and that the stats prove that we are causing global warming.
