Pink Floyd Are Dead, But David Gilmour Certainly Isn't

By: ChartAttack.com Staff

David Gilmour

Pink Floyd guitarist/singer David Gilmour has ended all the band reunion rumours once and for all and formally pronounced the group "over."

After Gilmour and bassist/singer Roger Waters played together at last summer’s Live 8 concert in the U.K., speculation spread that the band would reform to tour later this year. But the rumour mill can now officially close down due to statements made by Gilmour in an interview with Italian newspaper, La Repubblica.

"The band? It’s over. Reunited because of the good cause, to get over the bad relationship, and not to have regrets.

"I think I’ve had enough. I am 60. I don’t want to work much anymore. It's an important part of my life, I have had enormous satisfactions, but now it's enough. It’s much more comfortable to work on my own."

Gilmour emphasized that the decision to not reunite had nothing to do with his stormy relationship with Waters, who left Pink Floyd in 1983. The guitarist simply believes that the band is too big of a "business" now and he didn’t want to deal with the pressure or expectations — with or without Waters.

Gilmour has, however, completed work on his third solo album. His first release since Pink Floyd’s multi-platinum Division Bell in 1994 was co-produced by Roxy Music's Phil Manzanera and Chris Thomas(Sex Pistols, The Pretenders, INXS). On An Island features David Crosby and Graham Nash on harmonies, Robert Wyatt on cornet, Floyd’s Richard Wright on organ and Gilmour taking his first stab at playing saxophone. It will be released on March 7.

Gilmour will play Toronto's Massey Hall on April 9 and 10 in support of the album.

Here are the songs you can hear On An Island:

"Castellorizon" "On An Island" "The Blue" "Take A Breath" "Red Sky At Night" "This Heaven" "Then I Close My Eyes" "Smile" "Pocket Full Of Stones" "Where We Start" —Phil Villeneuve

Do they have any sort of light show?

My favorite band. My tagline kinda gives that away. I'll have to drive from KC to Chicago to see them.

Great picture!

I'm definitely jealous of all the folks who got to see them live back in the 70s. I'd kill for a video of a live wall show.

...Gilmour taking his first stab at playing saxophone.

That should be interesting. I wonder if Gilmour on sax will sound anything like Gilmour on guitar. Sometimes a musician's natural sense of phrasing will carry over from one instrument to the other.

Why does the horrific image of Slick Willy on The Tonight Show pop into my head?

Alex Lifeson and Dave Gilmour have to be the 2 greatest "feeling" guitar players of all time.

Greatest band ever. Best band ever.

But, they are all grandfathers now and don't need to go through the rigors of touring or producing an album.

Besides, they have nothing to prove to anybody.

I have many favorites, including "Dogs," which is brilliant.

But, I favor the post-Syd, pre-Dark Side era. No one sounded like them and they sounded like no one else. Totally original.

One of my very first albums was their first album, "The Piper at the Gates of Dawn". "Interstellar Overdrive" was so far removed from the mainstream fare on the radio in 1967 it was listening to a bunch of Martians. First time I saw them live was in 1971 at CWRU. Mind-blowing, and probably the best sounding live concert I've heard, ever, and it was in a gym!. For all you youngsters out there, IMHO, their best work came before Dark Side and includes Ummagumma, Atom Heart Mother and Meddle. They were true pioneers.

1967, eh? Maybe in eleven years they can do the "Shine on you Crazy Diamond Anniversary" tour.

Actually Roger Waters hadn't ruled out a full album performance (say Dark Side of the Moon) again for the right event. But I had never heard any talk of a reunited Pink Floyd tour.

Besides Poison 13 is playing this month, The Saints are touring the US, and the original Sonics may re-unite to play a gig in May.

I've seen Roger Waters 3 times. Too hard to get any kind of decent seats to enjoy the show (although I did manage 6th row center tickets to Radio KAOS).

Rock and roll has more energy in a club.

That's what I said to the critics of the Stones performance at the Super Bowel. Stadium rock, ain't rock'n'roll, it's shoe business!

By the way, Ray Davies' new LP (LP? what's that?) was, according to his website, "slated to land on February 7th, 2006." Is it out? Amazon sez Feb 21.

New Ray Davies album is out (at least I saw a promotional copy but haven't listened to it yet).

The Rolling Stones played CBGB's last month. I managed to catch Ron Wood backing up Ian MacLagen (The Faces) after a local Stones gig last year.

Trip to heave and ho, up down, to and fro
you have no word
trip, trip to a dream dragon
hide your wings in a ghost tower
sails crackiling at ev'ry plate we break
cracked by scattered needles
little minute gong
coughs and clears his throat
