NFL should feel embarrassed

SEATTLE - And now a word about the officiating in Super Bowl XL. Two words actually.

It stunk.

The interference call, a push-off on Darrell Jackson that cost the Seahawks a first-quarter touchdown, was hideous.

If former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin hadn't been allowed to use his arm to get separation the innocent way Jackson did in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, Irvin would have caught maybe 20 balls in his career.

And the fourth-quarter holding call on right tackle Sean Locklear that nullified a spectacular catch by tight end Jerramy Stevens at the Pittsburgh 1-yard line was equally egregious.

Post all the animated gifs ya like, Petro-Boy.

The fact is, the Squeelers won't get any respect from the rest of the league until you can prove you can win without the Zebras.

Boy-O-Boy did Ben look like shyt against that inferior NFC defense!

I'm a 'hawks fan; being a local, of course I support them over Pitts. But even if the 'hawks had won on such lousy calls, this Super Bowl would never be over, in my mind.

What's the fun of a game (and I do remember it is just a game, although people's livelihoods depend on it and the teams put their hearts, souls, and bodies into it 100 percent) if it's not a fair contest?

Argh.

It was called in Pitt vs Indy and in Pitt s Cincy the following week, the call went against Pitt both times. The ref called the rule the way the rule is written, calling the rules as written shouldn't keep a ref out of the Super Bowl.

I don't think the call against Hasselback is causing anything, though of course it being Wednesday there is nothing left except a few diehards that just don't know when to shutup. The story is over. It's been 3 days, the story is over, the Olympics start soon, the world is moving on and will be done moving on by this coming Sunday. There will be another blip when the competition committee meets, but it will be a minor blip about the same size as every year's competition committee meeting (10 seconds on Sports Center, maybe 400 words on the website covering the SB calls and other issues).

We really don't have an ongoing discussion. Some people just can't let it go, but they're wrong, they've been established and proven to be wrong over and over, but they're following the old "say it enough times and it becomes true" mantra. The problem they've forgotten is that it's sports, it's a temporary world, things move on. The season is over, a year from now unless one or both of these teams is in the SB again nobody is even going to mention it, 5 years from now only a handful of diehards will even remember who lost the game much less if there was an officiating controversy. Sports is about the moment, very few of those moments are remembered for long, the one that will be remembered from SB XL is Bettis announcing his retirement on the stage with the Lombardi in his hands.

except that the refs have gotten most of the calls RIGHT.

The TD was a TD. I've had nearly 10 minutes to review it via TIVO and my HD Sony Wega.

the offensive PI was offensive PI, and there was an illegal contact penalty in front of that on the defense. It doesn't change anything. The TD still woulnd't have stood.

I still don't think they got the number right on the hold.

The tackle didn't hold anyone, but there was an absolute mugging in the middle of the line.

No... WE LOST.

Well, you definitely lost.

You lost your self-respect, your sense of dignity, your sense of proportion. You definitely lost whatever was cloaking your instinctive sense of moonbattiness.

I'll give you this though: it's DAMN entertaining to watch. Your anguish is sweet music.

Pittsburgh will never EVER get the national credit it craves for this tainted win.

It's already happened.

One year from now the records will show 21-10.
Ten years from now the records will show 21-10.
You get the flow.

You're not alone in that feeling. Unless you live in or around Pittsburgh you're pretty much left with a feeling of...did I eat some bad pizza? It doesn't sit well; from the horrid entertainment to the questionable officiating.

This game will never be over! The Seahawks always triumph! Honestly, all these threads complaining about the game almost make up for the somniferous game itself. Never would I have thought that a game so forgettable would be hashed and rehashed to this extent.

Your anguish is sweet music.

I got no anguish.

I'm relishing in the fact that the Stillers got a cheap slug that they think is a gold coin.

The rest of the NFL world is laughing at you.

If somebody is laughing at either SB team they're laughing at Seattle for the following reasons:
Seattles first 3 possession went into Steeler territory, but two were stopped beyond FG range so they only got points on 1. Get another 1st down (note Seattle's terrible 5 for 17 3rd conversion rate) and get into FG range that's 6 points they get.
On two consecutive plays Seattle receivers caught almost garaunteed TDs out of bounds. There's another 7 points they missed.
I won't count the missed FG after the blown TD because had they caught the ball there'd have been no FG kick.
But then on the final possession of the 1st half they once again fell one converted 3rd down short of good FG range and missed it, there's another 3 points they missed.

That's 16 points the Seahawks left on the field in the first half, all on drives that had no controversial call and I think no penalties at all. That's why Seattle lost, they had their chances and didn't capitalize.

I'm gonna keep hitting you with this over and over because that's the reality you fear to aknowledge. Seattle lost all by themselves.

Actually the rest of the NFL world is looking at prospective Free Agents and the upcoming draft, but since you live in your own little world......

Here's a new stastic:

The Seahawks had 7, count em, 7, drives where there were no penalties.

They didn't do squat.

I know.

And they called a draw with 33 seconds to go in the 1st half which effectively killed another drive....

The fact is, the Squeelers won't get any respect from the rest of the league until you can prove you can win without the Zebras.

Somehow the Steelers will get by without the support of Skip Clueless, Colin Coward and the psychotic set.

But cheer up kiddo, tomorrow is Thursday, and I understand that at "the home," on Thursdays you get pudding!
