SEATTLE - And now a word about the officiating in Super Bowl XL. Two words actually.
It stunk.
The interference call, a push-off on Darrell Jackson that cost the Seahawks a first-quarter touchdown, was hideous.
If former Dallas Cowboy Michael Irvin hadn't been allowed to use his arm to get separation the innocent way Jackson did in Sunday's loss to Pittsburgh, Irvin would have caught maybe 20 balls in his career.
And the fourth-quarter holding call on right tackle Sean Locklear that nullified a spectacular catch by tight end Jerramy Stevens at the Pittsburgh 1-yard line was equally egregious.

I've noticed that you won't give the entirity of what Jim Rome said, although you LOVE to claim that he's saying the refs gave the game to the Steelers (you're wrong and you know it but since it doesn't help you, you want to bring it up since HE brought it up)....
There's nothing to take seriosly. The things people are complaining about were the right call.
well, I dont think I have ever seen it called ... if the same ref called it, it brings up the question of why he is working the SB?
maybe, the call against Hasselbeck is probably what is causing this national talkrage. it was so egregious that it gives the appearance of being blatant against one team, and then folks bring all the other questionable calls into play as supporting evidence. if that call hadnt been made we probably wouldnt have this uch continuing discussion about the game.
Doubt it. With the way sports are covered today the refs will ALWAYS be under the microscope in the big games.

you have made the remark a few times now ... why don't you tell us the "entirety" of what Jim Rome said. not that he is an undisputed expert, but if he said something that can add to the discussion, why not tell us, hmm?
Here's the reality of why Seattle lost the game, again, which I'm sure you'll ignore, again:
Seattles first 3 possession went into Steeler territory, but two were stopped beyond FG range so they only got points on 1. Get another 1st down (note Seattle's terrible 5 for 17 3rd conversion rate) and get into FG range that's 6 points they get.
On two consecutive plays Seattle receivers caught almost garaunteed TDs out of bounds. There's another 7 points they missed.
I won't count the missed FG after the blown TD because had they caught the ball there'd have been no FG kick.
But then on the final possession of the 1st half they once again fell one converted 3rd down short of good FG range and missed it, there's another 3 points they missed.
I can't quote it.
He said, effectively, that the calls were crap (he said crap today, he said questionable on Monday), but that the game wasn't decided by those calls. he went on to point out that Seattle's horrible clock management, missed FGs and getting burned on the reverse pass contributed more than the refs did.
Effectively.
Why even play the game? Mike Holmgren and Bill Cowher should just have played Madden 2006 on the Playstation 2.

It was after the Titans game, I was back in Columbus and actually had a chance to see the Titans game on TV. It was one of the last three games of the season because I had to pick Dawson up for my Fantasy team because I was in kicker hades and I needed that 3 FF points bad. To not even try the FG , aack. I mean at the 29 if you don't think the kicker can make it. Go for it. Odds are a punt will go in the end zone and the field position change is .. oooh.. 9 yards.
I'm just not sold on Romeo yet. I hope I'm wrong. But something about him just screams Art Shell to me. Even though Art had a 54-38 coaching record, he was 2-3 in the playoffs and I never thought he was that good as a Head Coach.
Again I hope I am very wrong.
I would agree with all of that.
Seattle dropped passes, had horrible time management, and failed to stop big plays.
all that said, they didnt deserve the treatment they got from the refs.
neither of these teams is great. but this could have been an exciting SB between 2 second-level teams, but the refs seemed to want otherwise.

Actions that do not constitute pass interference include but are not limited to:
(a) Incidental contact by a defender's hands, arms, or body when both players are competing for the ball, or neither player is looking for the ball. If there is any question whether contact is incidental, the ruling shall be no interference.
(b) Inadvertent tangling of feet when both players are playing the ball or neither player is playing the ball.
(c) Contact that would normally be considered pass interference, but the pass is clearly uncatchable by the involved players.
(d) Laying a hand on the receiver that does not restrict the receiver in an attempt to make a play on the ball. (e) Contact by a defender who has gained position on a receiver in an attempt to catch the ball.
Actions that constitute offensive pass interference include but are not limited to:
(a) Blocking downfield by an offensive player prior to the ball being touched.
(b) Initiating contact with a defender by shoving or pushing off thus creating a separation in an attempt to catch a pass.
(c) Driving through a defender who has established a position on the field.
The Seahawk's arm is between the Steeler's hands, as can be seen in this picture.
What cannot be seen in this picture is that the Steeler's hands are too far apart to be gripping the receiver.

although I would take Art Shell over Bubba Butch Davis at this point.....
I was at the Titans game and at the Baltimore game on New Year's.
The Titans game had a similar situation except he was kicking from around the 25. They went ahead and went for it as they had a 50 kt headwind.
My wife was saying that she wondered why the Edmund Fitzgerald hadn't docked yet up there :)
