Britney Speared in Lap-Gate: "Just So, So Scary" Emotes CBS' Syler

It wouldn't have been more than a couple years ago that had headlines invoked Britney Spears in a "lap" controversy, images of graphic goings-on in the Champagne Lounge might have come to mind.

But time marches on, and Britney-the-new-mother is now caught in a lap-gate of an altogether different sort, after photos of her were snapped driving her car with her four-month old son in her lap rather than secured in a car seat. In the latest development, according to this LA Times article, a Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy went to her Malibu home on Tuesday "to collect information for child welfare investigators" in connection with the matter. For the record, Spears says she was feeling hounded by paparazzi and drove off with the baby in her lap to escape them.

The morning shows worked themselves into a collective lather over the horror of it all, with the sentiment best summed up by CBS Early Show co-host Rene Syler, who, interviewing a child safety expert, emoted: "every time we look at that picture, it's just so, so scary."

Pluh-eese. Sure, kids should be strapped in a car seat in the back. But just a generation or so ago, an image of a parent tooling around with junior in her lap might have evoked cooing sounds from the person sitting in Syler's chair. The Andy Griffith Show meets Leave it to Beaver.

But today, in our therapeutic society, Britney's gaffe, if that's what it is, merited national news coverage. At one point at the beginning of the 7:30 AM half-hour, ABC, NBC and CBS were simultaneously airing a segment on the matter.

In a world where every day untold numbers of terrorists are plotting to kill as many men, women, and yes, little children as possible, where are the MSM's priorities?

It could be that, but that caption wouldn't sell nearly as many papers.

Simply a ratings ploy. If you can get BS on the boob tube (no pun intended)--especially if its *scandalous*--you do it.

That is the interior door panel. Notice the chrome strip on top and the color is the same as the top of the panel on the driver's side.

There is video out there too of the car moving.

People need to start pulling back on the "rules".

This Nanny state bullcrap has gone too far. THAT is my point.

If you don't like what the woman did, that is YOUR problem.

This country used to be about Freedom. Now it's about what can we do next to interfere with other's lives.

If it was good enough for our fathers and grandfathers. Why isn't it good enough now?

One drop at a time. That is how you lose your freedom. It doesn't come all at once and 90% of the people in this country are too GD stupid to realize that.

Great post...this one goes in my archives. Odd how people go ballistic in these 'safety' scenarios, but barely notice as their children's minds are being ravaged on a daily basis in public schools.

That red line is a curb. It curves up, which would not match the straight line on the drivers side.

But if you say there is video out there, I will take your word for it. I have not researched this issue. It could be this photo was taken with a long lens, so the perspective is distorted in unexpected ways.

If she really were driving with her child on her lap like that, somebody ought to inform her that her steering wheel is packed with explosives.

We had some a$$hole woman around here (Atlanta) last year stepping out in front of cars to assert "pedestrian rights" or some silly thing like that since legally pedestrians have the right of way except at intersections controlled by traffic lights - I guess she got mad because someone wouldn't slam on their brakes to let her j-walk...

I encountered a similar jackass in Rochester, Vermont last year. A 'womyn' was walking a group of children home from school, and she decided to make a sudden turn to lead the children across the road. I was moving along about 25 mph on icy roads. I felt that if I had slammed on the brakes, there was the possibility of skidding right into the kids. I went through the crosswalk. NO ONE had stepped off the sidewalk. I looked in the mirror, and saw the woman screaming and yelling. I pulled over, and walked back to explain my actions. The woman (who bore an uncanny resemblace to Julianne Malveaux) was literally spitting with rage..."You needed to stop...it's the LAWWWWWWWWWW!" When it became clear I couldn't reason with this communist idiot, I said "Look, honey...just because you're mad that George Bush beat your boy Kerry like a drum a few months ago; don't take it out on me." Boy, did I hit a nerve. I left her there screaming like a banshee possessed.

My children love to sleep on my dashboard when we go on trips.

I used to hang out in the rear window of Dad's Chevy and watch the stars on trips across the US when I was a little boy. That is not sarcasm...merely the truth.

The one here managed to make it on the local "news." I marveled at her arrogant stupidity, but then people who live in Atlanta probably have an average IQ considerably lower than the rest of the state (They vote overwhelmingly Democrat :-)

To be honest, I slept under the glass of the hatch of a mid to late 80's Firebird when driving from Columbus to Detroit one weekend when I was little. Yea, Dad didnt know better but that wasnt the safest.

In fact, when you look at some of the real welfare slutty trash that inhabits our society, Brittany starts to look pretty good.

That's because she has more than one tooth; and while she does tend to wear scanty slutwear, at least she isn't 400 lbs of hairy-armpitted woman trying to wear scanty slutwear!

Sad thing is, this sort of thing happens across the USA. I know the older folks out there will say "heck, I dont know how I survived all this time not beng buckled as a baby". I understand where you are coming from but strictly from a statistical standpoint, many children did indeed die from being unbuckled or being held by a parent in a passenger seat (or the drivers seat in this case).

There you go again-using logic to make a point.

Well, to be fair, actually I think she's taking heat because she's Britney.

LOL, I do think you have it. I guess Britney's not A-list Hollywood anymore. If she ever was.

I'm still aghast that she drove with the little guy on her lap, didn't bother to hand him off to the front seat passenger. Was it Kevin? Even in a rush to avoid the papparazzi (lol), he could have jumped into the backseat, she could have handed off the baby, and the baby could have been safely strapped in whilst they fled. But she is thinking she can get away with it because she's a star.

People need to start minding their own damned business and leave others to mind theirs.

Absolutely agree, but absolutely realize it will never happen. People cannot face the fact of their own worthless existence and so attempt to manage yours so they won't have to face the fact.

It's not anyone's business what that woman does.

If you were the kid, and you could know the risks of sitting in the front seat, you might think differently.

I agree that all of the hyperventilating is a bit much, but there is a reason for genuine concern here.

self-righteous busybodies expressing faux outrage

What you said!

And I am hearing people say in horror that it was for A COUPLE OF MILES and the travel on the PCH is 60-70 mph. According to my old math, that would mean two minutes of "chld abuse."

Not a good practice Britney but, really, a minor lapse. What a pantload.
